Davis accepts $50,000 donations from two energy companies

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Two energy companies each donated $25,000 to Gov. Gray Davis' re-election campaign during a recent trip to the East Coast, it was reported Friday.

Campaign finance reports show that Davis accepted the contributions from Caithness Energy of New York and Florida-based FPL Energy. Both firms are independent energy producers that sell electricity in California and are involved in construction of new power plants, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Davis defended the decision even though he had promised he would not accept money from energy wholesalers during the state's power woes. He said that neither donor was gouging ratepayers for electricity earlier this year.

``First of all,'' Davis said, ``the worst of the energy crisis is behind us. My concern was in not taking money from people who were actively selling us power at high prices during the difficult early months of 2001. To my knowledge, neither of those companies are active players in that process.''

Critics disagreed with the governor's opinion that the state's energy crisis is over.

``Tell that to the 20 million ratepayers who have had their rates go up an average 50 percent this year,'' said Harvey Rosenfield, president of the San Diego-based Foundation for Taxpayer and Consumer Rights. ``When ratepayers start getting their money back, he can start taking campaign contributions.''

FPL Energy operates wind and solar generators in California and Caithness sells geothermal energy to Southern California Edison. Both companies are partners in the construction of a natural gas plant in Blythe.

Davis raised at least $150,000 during the four-day trip to New York and Florida in October. Citibank gave the largest donation, $50,000.

Davis did not disclose that his East Coast trip was for fund-raising. His aides said on Oct. 29 that Davis would travel to Washington to talk with the Bush administration about using California police as sky marshals on airplanes.

How Clintonesque. Thanks to a cooler than forecasted summer the state no longer has immediate power woes so, in his mind, he is keeping his promise.

Commie putz.

I agree with your description of Herr Davis with the exception of commie putz!

Davis is a fascist right out of the history books. He is the reincarnation of Mussoline and Hitler. Davis wants the money and power that he gets as the head Facist for Kalifornia. Like these two donations!

He is so damn arrogant and feels that there is no law or restriction that applies to him!

I guest it depends on your definition of the word "actively selling" right? What a scum-sucking bottom dweller this guy is. Doesn't matter though. All the illegals and their cousins in Calif. will definitely vote for the man who keeps them awash in taxpayer handouts. The rest of the public-skoool trained Marxists will let their pride dictate their block voting patterns.

Doesn't really matter though, go HERE to see the future of Kalifonia.

My best advice to Kalifornians who want to stay in Aztlan is to ignore the gun laws, stock-up and train as ITS A COMING BABY!!!

Kalifornians will now have to deal with the largest debt in the history of the state due to Davis' energy purchases. I hear the reality of the debt is around 20B, not 14B as reported by the dominant news media. What a governor this *&%$#@* is!!! I work in the UC system and the writing's on the wall that many UC staff will probably loose their jobs because of this moron's corrupt leadership. NO, I did not vote for him.

Now, if politics is like that, I don't want any part of it.

Strictly an opinion....but can I ask what ever happened to Gov. Gray-out Davis's portion of the 93 million dollars he helped Scotish-owned PP&L steal from the Klamath Basin Farmers? Gray-out, what a sorry excuse for a human being.

Dear Govenor Davis,

Let's see. I live in Lodi (where we generate our own power and were never deregulated). But you used my portion of the surplus to pay the cost of buying energy for everyone that was deregulated.

Maybe you need to send the donations to the people of Lodi.

I don't believe any amount of donations will get you reelected or sent on to Washington.
