So, what's your favorite romantic movie? (re: American Film Institute (AFI) )

Will it be Rhett Butler and Scarlett O'Hara? The dying young woman who claims love "means never having to say you're sorry'? Or the star-crossed Italian lovers from Verona?

The search for America's 100 greatest love movies was launched on Wednesday by the American Film Institute (AFI) as part of series celebrating 100 years of cinema.

The AFI sent out ballots to 1,800 actors, screenwriters, critics and historians for its "100 Years...100 passions" feature, linked to a CBS television special to be aired in June 2002.

The event follows searches over the last four years by the AFI for the top movies of the past century, the most beloved stars, the best comedies, and the scariest thrillers.

AFI director Jean Picker Firstenberg said the theme of romance was chosen for the cinema centennial series before the Sept. 11 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.

But she added "As we move forward we are now -- more than ever-- reminded that the movies tell stories that move us and bring us together; and though the lovers on screen may end up apart when the lights come up, we, the movie lovers, remain bound by their emotional journey."

Jurors are asked to choose their top 100 romantic movies from a list of 400 provided by the AFI and return their ballots by December 14.

You can watch Die Hard with the whole family!

Just imagine the kids running about the house pointing toy guns at each other shouting "Yippie-ki-yay mother******!"

Maybe that'll just be my kids...

I'm not exactly in the most romantic mood this year and my first reaction - prior to reading the thread was to list:

1. Tom Horn - Woman - "Do you love me?"

Tom Horn - "Do ya' see that horse over there? I've had that horse nigh onto twelve years. I haven't even given' 'em a name yet."

2. Sands of Iwo Jima - Great Single guy flick!

3. Braveheart

4. Rob Roy

5. The Princess Bride

However, in Keeping with the 2,300 post thread that heralds the joys of Asian women I'll say that my favorite Romantic movie is:

Sayonara

TS

A single, divorced, sleeping alone and staying awake until the wee hours of the morning Freeping - TS ;-)

I'm a fool for romance and romantic movies. Is it possible to select only one ? .

Gone With The Wind, An Affair To Remember, Casablanca, Ghost, The Quiet Man, Pillow Talk, To Catch A Thief, The Grass Is Greener, Picnic, Sleepless In Seattle, Bringing Up Baby. Sabrina (both versions) All This And Heaven Too.

You know, for the life of me, I just never saw the appeal of that coupling--I just never picked up on any chemistry. IMO, K.Hepburn was AOK, though -- I always liked that WASPy type...

It's a matter of personal opinion, of course, but I always liked the battle of wills while underneath there was always respect and love.

Well - that makes 3 othes who know about the Betty Davis Classic (IMHO): All This and Heaven, Too. Maybe enough to get some people to go find this lovely heart-tugging movie. And there are children in it too - the little one who kept calling, "Mamselle, mamselle" gets me ever time!

(Hint - this is something like the Maria Von Trapp story - only much more sinister "mrs" wed to Charles Boyer's distinguished character. Well worth the rental fee..or just buy it so you can watch a masterpiece over and over).

There are so many favorites, but I love the light hearted romantic comedies with Doris Day...I love That Touch of Mink with her and Cary Grant.
Also, I like Cary and Hepburn in Bringing up Baby. Oh, and Philadephia Story with Grant, Hepburn and my all time favorite...Jimmy Stewart.

Legends of the Fall?

I never saw it but all my friends raved about it. I don't like romantic movies, but I did think ROCKY was. One of my favorite movies.

The most romantic movie I've ever seen is full of sinful dialogue and scenes. And though I haven't seen it in over 15 years, I still love it.

It was aired as a mini-series in the mid 80's, and starred Jean Simmons, Mare Winningham, Piper Laurie, and the devestatingly gorgeous actress and actor, Rachel Ward and Richard Chamberlain in "The Thornbirds."

RE: Infinity, I've never heard of that one. I'll have to check it out. Thanks. It's hard to find anything without language/sex/etc., that is okay to watch with children around, or for that matter, grownups!
