Woman Awarded $2 Million from Husband's Mistress
WKRN ^

Posted on 11/16/2001 1:09:32 PM PST by chance33_98

A North Carolina woman is $2 million richer after winning a lawsuit against her husband's mistress.

She sued under the state's alien of affection law.

The woman testified that the other woman infiltrated her family and demanded retribution.

The judge agreed.

"Well, of course I think it takes two to tango," said Christine Cooper, the sued husband's girlfriend.

Some legal experts have questioned the constitutionality of the law, calling it an opportunity to get revenge on a spouse.

The ruling is the most money ever awarded under the law.

Don't know that one.

The song I was talking about is "You Never Even Called Me By My Name" by David Allan Coe.

Part of the lyrics:

"WELL, I WAS DRUNK THE DAY MY MOM GOT OUT OF PRISON
AND I WENT TO PICK HER UP IN THE RAIN
BUT BEFORE I COULD GET TO THE STATION IN MY PICKUP TRUCK
SHE GOT RUNNED OVER BY A DAMNED OLD TRAIN"

Still applies. The alienation law I think was not meant to make sure one spouse or another was financially taken care of, rather to condemn adultery. And for those that disagree with the law, if you're in NC, don't get married and don't break up marriages. If you're not in NC and don't like the law, I don't really care and from the votes that our held within our legislature apparently the majority of North Carolinians don't care what you think either. We didn't ask for your approval nor do we need it. We are still a republic(although not much of anymore) and the states do have the rights to make laws within the borders without the approval of the other states or their citzenry

The conniver PAIR should both pay....gross negligence toward the feelings and economic security of another.

I tend to agree, but then, my parent's home was broken up by this kind of thing, so, I'm kind of prejudiced. Just think about all the divorces that would NOT ever even be considered, the children who would not have to face "joint custody" arrangements, the men who would not have to pay alimony because they would have no ex-wives, the ex-wives who would not have to try to live on what they make because they can't find their ex-husbands who owe child support, the possibilities are endless. The "man" is not always the cheating spouse. And the cheating spouse is as much at fault, if not more so, than the person the spouse is cheating with.

Do you think that SHOULD be a law in every state??? If not, why.

That is such a great observation.
I think that deserve a poll, phantom...

Dig around your closet for that asbestos suit first, though...

Yes, I know a few wives who have forgiven their husbands for one or two weak moments.....usually in mid-life after an, otherwise, happy marriage. My husband and I had some issues to deal with at mid-life as well.

You know, there are a lot of reasons why men stray, but one that the media just won't talk about is that straying is just "exciting", "naughty", "forbidden". The lure of forbidden fruit is very strong. Not every straying man is unhappy with his marriage. As a matter of fact, we've seen this happen time and again in the church. A number of men who stray at mid-life are more unhappy with themselves than with their spouses or marriages. Unfortunately, no "one" person can make another person completely happy.

In the above cases, the reason the marriges were able to get back on track is precisely because the men recognized their sinfulness and DID NOT blame their wives for their own actions. Contrast that with sitting through 2 years of pyschobabble disecting a marriage to see "what went wrong with it".

Some marriages need that kind of help; at the same time, I think that kind of help probably destroys a few marriages that would have otherwise remained intact.

Just something to consider.

Not picking on men.....women are a whole 'nother topic.

That is a lot of money... maybe I should let my husband get a mistress! (except for that pesky infidelity thing... ;)

Think it through, girl!
Pick the woman yourself. Make sure she has the bucks, first.
I suggest Leona Helmsley.

After we get done with the Taliban, al-qaeda, Iraq and Syria, I suggest we see what can be done about the trial lawyers. I think they are terrorists with fountain pens instead of bombs and missiles. I'm not really being funny here, there really needs to be some meaningful reform of lawsuits in this country. Everybody knows it (just like we all knew that we would have to face the terrorists one day) we just hope it will go away.

I have been telling my wife since day one that I should be allowed to have an affair with a wealthy older women that will kick off soon. Then i will get her money and we will be set. I can't get her to agree to it yet. I could be the male version of Anna Nicole Smith!

The "man" is not always the cheating spouse.

No, just the only one that could be held at fault. If a man cheats on his wife, its because he is a jerk. If a woman cheats, its because her husband isn't fulfilling her needs. At least that's what my television tells me...
