My grandfather was my personal hero. I am trying to write an obituary for the local newspapers-this is the first draft. What I have said here is not a fraction of what he meant to me. One the things he always tried to impress upon me was how fortunate we were to be Americans. FR helps to sustain that belief in me every day.

Isn't it amazing how close so many of us are to our grandfathers, partiularly of that generation.

My dad was a radio sergeant with Patton's 3rd during the campaign across France. He was one of a handfull of radio-men who could both operate and repair the radio trucks...he was constantly up and down the lines. I feel very fortunate to have heard his many stories in the few years before he passed...so that I can pass them along to my boys.

Dad was also the town marshall for each of the towns we lived in, a total of about 16 years. That generation didn't know quit when it came to service, whether to their community or county. I pray that our generation and those to come will continue to produce men (and women) of this character.

A history is an orderly register of notable things said, and events that happened in time past. Its purpose is to maintain the continual remembrance of these events, and to serve for the instruction of those to come

It is my belief that while we are free agents in many of the choices we make in life, certain elements of our genetic make-up guide us far more than we realize. To a certain extent we are predestined to make decisions and adopt certain attitudes based on predisposition and calling.

Certainly you got some good stuff from you Grandad.

Your grandfather was very lucky to have you for a grandson. I wish I had taken the time to get to know my grandparents. I can't imagine all the stories I missed, considering my one grandpa was born 1881. My prayers are with you.

He was a North Carolina REPUBLICAN during the 1940s? Brave guy. I salute him for winning against the odds.

I am very sorry to hear of your grandfather's passing. I remember meeting your grandfather many years ago at a Republican dinner in Mitchell County, he was a true gentleman. As in your case my grandfather was my hero (he passed away in Nov of 95). As more and more members of that "great" generation pass it's very important that we remember their valor and sacrifices. May God Bless you 91B and your family.

I've read only your post and a few replies, so if someone else asked this, I apologize for the dual question. Do you have a photo of your grandfather (at any age) that you could post? The true essence of a person comes through so much more in a picture.

I didn't know either of my grandfathers very well; we moved away from them when I was a wee one, and the one I did spend time with was 6'4" and always rather frightening to me as a preschooler, although he was not a frightening man at all when I met him again as an adult. But I had one grandmother who was the most precious thing (person) to me in all the world when I was young. So I have something of an appreciation for what you feel right now. I pray God comforts you with the wonderful memories you have of your time with him.
