I'm on one of the JWR news junk mail lists and I just got this in my email. It's just speculation, but I thought it was worth posting.

If it *was* engine trouble, well, there's still time to short AMR stock.

This on Newsmax: Mechanical Trouble Reported Before Take-Off

An American Airlines A-300 reported mechanical trouble while waiting to take off Monday morning, about an hour before it crashed just outside News York's JFK Airport.

AA Flight 587 was scheduled to take off at 8:00 a.m. but was held on the ground for an hour and fifteen minutes to repair an unidentified mechanical problem, a travel agent familiar with the flight told WABC Radio.

Additionally, a United Airlines pilot says he over-heard a radio report from Flight 587's pilot saying he was experiencing engine trouble before the plane exploded in mid-air over New York's Jamaica Bay.

The Bush administration has announced the FBI believes that Flight 587 did explode in mid-air and is working to determine the cause.

This is odd, since the NTSB keeps saying that there was no unusual communication between the cockpit and the tower.

Not speculating; however, Ashley Banfield(sp?), (MSNBC), just reporting that FBI has declared the crash site a "crime scene" and is currently cordoning the crash area (she is on site). Not sure if this means they suspect a crime or if this is just SOP to control evidence in case a crime is later suspected or determined.

Terrorists don't make their actions look like accidents. That would defeat the whole purpose.

This looks like an accident.

I thought so, too. Ari also INSISTED preliminary reports showed "NO UNUSUAL COMMUNICATION between the pilot and the towers at takeoff or with New York after takeoff"

I wondered about that also. We hear that there was no communication from the aircraft on the one hand, and this on the other.
We hear there was an explosion and then we hear there was not, then we hear again that there was! Frustrating!

Looks most likely to be mechanical failure. Good news for Americans. Not bad for Boeing either.

I hate to even think about this, and I hope I'm wrong, but is the site of the crash the same place mentioned by Mike Moran as his home? Is there a connection?

STFU. Class act, spewing garbage about good news and not bad for Boeing hours after a tragedy. Think you could wait until the wreckage cools?

Likewise, apologies. At this point though, way too early to say what happened.

Thanks for the confirmation. I hope that's just coincidence. I'll wait for the analysis, but right now it sounds pretty suspicious to me.

14 - I was on a major trading desk on Wall Street the day the Challenger went down, and the guy behind me was telling jokes before the search & rescue craft reached the scene, and legend has several traders shorting Morton Thiokol (sp?) before it hit the water.

Very coincidental that the wreckage hit an inhabited area when about 98% of its flight path was over water. A timed device would have set it off earlier, on the ground, due to the holdover, but a radio detonator could have crashed the plane over land the very few moments it was going to be there. So if it wasn't a terrorist attack, two unusual things had to happen. First, a plane designed to be able to fly after dropping an engine wasn't able to, and two, it just happened to crash over an inhabited area when almost its entire flight path was over water. Possible, yes; likely, no.
