Ridiculous. It could be done at the ticket counter, especially while you're waiting for your ticket to be processed. It can also be done once your bag is taken and put on that conveyor belt leaving the ticket area.
Seems to me that Lufthansa was doing this at Logan as far back as 1996. A big white xray machine positioned immediately before the ticket counter.
