I sincerely hope that it was not an Arab attack.

Actually, after initial shock, thoughts: If it were a collision with a smaller plane there ought to be TWO crash sites. One large one with the 767 and another smaller one for the small plane unless it wasn't destroyed which is hard to imagine. So there ought to be TWO impact sites yes?

Rockaway Beach is about 5 miles east of Breezy Point on the narrow barrier island peninsula.
I opened clams and made pizza in a stand in Rockaway Beach for 4 years during the 60s.

Doesn't look like terrorism on this occasion. But if it isn't...what are the odds?

"missle?"Either a missle or an on board detonation by the cabin....a suicide bomber with a small amount of C-4 could avoid metal detection, rush the cockpit area and detonate....
This would cause enough damage to destroy the cockpit and/or incapacitate the pilots at the critical moment of approach....(the new reinforced doors are not bomb proof)
C-4 is undetectable by metal scanners and a small basting cap would slip through also.....Batteries could be used from a carry-on radio, cell phone etc.
Whatever happened had to happen fast because none of the passengers or crew would tolerate any shenanigans......

CNN reports 4 houses on fire. That was a steep angle approach. If an engine was out that could explain it. It might have listed over with wings vertical and cartwheeled into the ground. Maybe.

Do we know if AA had fortified the cockpit door yet?

School and church, shops, homes. Thank God it's a holiday - no school.

The engine could have taken in some birds. Patience.
To: Black Agnes
I can't believe this is an accident. You'd have to TRY to hit the Rockaways from the air. The plane had to have been completely out of the pilots' control.

Everyone, stop the repeated posts. Yes it was an AA767, yes 4 houses burned.
STOP THE RUMOR AND BS POSTS.
Keep bandwidth open for FACTS, nor rumors!
Read before you post.

description from (admittedly usually useless) eyewitnesses has plane breaking up at one engine and going into a spin. this is consistent with a midair (as in the southern california crach in 1978); also, with somebody shooting it down. just something to keep in mind. plane was jfk to santo domingo.

ABC is now reporting the aircraft was an Airbus 300.

Almost exactly 2 months from 9/11. Something smells fishy to me.

Terrorist activity unlikely. It was reported that an engine came off the plane as it was approaching the runway.

Now reporting that it was an American Airlines A-300.
To: imperator2
The only thing that would make one think it wasn't a terrorist attack is the plane was not full of fuel. I also pray it wasn't.

Sounds like mechanical failure to me, and this will be the end of American Airlines. If this is the best their mechanics can do, they deserve to be shut down.
