The American Red Cross collected hundreds of thousands of blood donations after Sept. 11 knowing that it could not be used for victims of the terrorist attacks.

After selling some of the surplus to hospitals, the Red Cross has begun to destroy thousands of pints that have outlasted their shelf life. Directors of several Red Cross blood centers said their sites may discard as many as 1 of every 5 donations and the national total could easily reach tens of thousands.

If they collected hundreds of thousands of units and managed to put 4 out of every 5 of them to use, that's a pretty decent record.

Same people that bitch about an 80% efficency rate with the Red Cross are more than willing to fork over thousands in tax dollars to a government that probably hasn't hit the 20% mark in most programs.

However, in their defense, they had no way to know how much blood would be needed in the weeks immediately after 9/11. I think they did the right thing to collect as much as they could manage.

You're right. All we knew during the first few days is there were 5000 victims. Had even half lived (and no one knew at the time) this would have been a HUGE drain on the blood supply.

Twice......but that is not the basis of my complaint against the Red Cross....which you would know if you read my comments. The blood was DONATED for victims, not to be sold by the ARC so they could pocket the profit along with the rest of the money they skimmed off the contributions to the victims. I will continue to donate blood and platelets as needed but I will also do everything I can to keep the Red Cross from repeating their performance since 9/11.

I dont want to read that crap. This is about 9/11 and an excess collection of blood that has to be disposed of. I have no time or desire to read your blood conspiracy garbage.

It's not just about 9/11...as late as last week they were still running ads asking for blood donations....why? so they could sell some more?

Thats what a charity does dude. Do you have a problem that the salvation army sells the used t-shirts and underwear you donate? The whole premise of a charity is you donate something out of a motivation of giving and allow them to use it to fund their operations. How long have you been on this planet?

Have you even a clue what the red cross does? See my previous response #49. Do you actually think the red cross hands out the bags of blood to victims like packs of sugar or flour at a soup kitchen? Get real. It goes through hospitals like a commodity and they charge the hospital and the hospital charges YOU.

Manners? Its it polite to mischaraterize what the red cross does because you don't have any understanding of their mission? I think not.

Disgusting! Every single one of those pints should go to help the families of those lost at the WTC!!!

Yeah, put it in canning jars and seal it with wax lids. There were 5000 dead and none used donated blood. Can you imagine the excess? Where do you think blood in hospitals comes from? Donations.

VA, there have been literally dozens of threads here in the last few weeks about the atrocious and quite probably criminal actions of the American Red Cross since 9/11. This blood thing is actually the LEAST worst thing they've done lately. You really ought to run a search.

They do the commecials because skull dense posters on internet bulletin boards (and other Americans) dont understand that blood has a short (2 months?) shelf life and despite all the nice stories about people donating for 9/11, they still need blood to perform their mission.

I understand that it is FRAUD to announce that all the money will go to the victims and then divert 80% of the money. Over $500 million was sent to the Red Cross, they decided after the fact to cap the donations for the 9/11 victims at $100 million and divert the rest. That was not the understanding of anyone who sent money after 9/11. You can defend them if you want to. I call them like I see them. And Bait and Switch is exactly what they did.

I know of those threads. I've been on a handful. These people are not only deprived of blood circulation to their brains, they're also short of oxygen. They simply have no idea or desire to learn on this charity operates.
