[history]
Afghan opposition forces captured the strategic northern town of Mazar-e-Sharif yesterday as U.S. airstrikes pounded nearby Taliban positions, Taliban Defense Minister Obaidullah Akhund confirmed today.
"Yes, Mazar has gone," he told Reuters.
"The city and its airport are with the opposition. Our forces are in Tangi Tashgurghan," he said, referring to a town 40 miles east of Mazar-e-Sharif.

And here's a rough babel.altavista.com translation of the Italian paragraph as seen on the above postcard's website (click the postcard above to link to the website):
The beautifulst mosque that it has never seen. Gold and turchese on a structure to square plant around which the city of Mazar-i-sharif rises. Roads that dipartono from the mosque ripetendone the simmetria. A total market divided for roads and fields, where merchants who do not know the concept of the competition, sell the same manufatti goodses and created with one archaic technology. Outside the sabbioso desert, flat, made red-hot from the sun, of which the wind you ne it remembers costantememte the existence. E' the tomba of Alì, the brother-in-law of Maometto, the prophet of the Sciti.

Lets all say the word.....airpower. Airpower does not shift sands in a day or two or three. But airpower eventually forces the opposition to reconsider its options. This is true in Iraq, Bosnia, and Yugoslavia. Given a open campaign and time, airpower makes the situation tilt our way. We don't have to waste the lives of our grunts nor do we have to destroy an entire country. We are careful about our targets and attempt to destroy what has to be leveled. For all of the armchair folks, get the facts straight. When we come around to your neighborhood during an air campaign, we will visit each and everyday. You will eventually move from your neighborhood. Thats a fact!

I can't help but wonder how many of their cities are still intact. It looks like Mazar-i-Sharif has escaped a lot of the war damage. Wonder what the rest of the country looks like?

Billie, thanks so much for calling this to my attention. Don't you love the way JH2 writes! (Good to see you!)
JH2, your essays are always excellent, but you've outdone yourself this time. This is exquisite! ^5 ;o)

> Thanks for the flag Billie! I've been trying to get JH to post his editorials in their own right on their own posts, but I can't get the humble fellow to do it! <
He just makes me so mad! I've been after him to do this for a LONG time. I finally gave up. Maybe you two can talk some sense into his head!
If it hadn't been for Billie pinging me, I'd never have seen it. Maybe we need a Bump_for_JH2 list? Not the best, but better than nothing. He and a couple of other good FReeper essayists need their own category IMO.
Okay, rant over. LOL

My sentiments exactly. Thanks, Cultural Jihad

I will have to take your word for the quotes since I refuse to watch or read the media dirtbags for more than five seconds at a time.
If we ever have a future war pwhere the enemy can seriously damage us (or if Bin Ladin proves to have a serious second punch to follow up his first) these traitorous media outlets will have to be closed down for the duration.

It's appalling to me that most in the media have attempted to mold this conflict into their made for TV war, complete with their own play-by-play liberal spinsters. Or in the case of Reuters, et. al, they've written misleading stories creating a conflict mirroring that of Viet-nam and portraying the Taliban as fierce and unbeatable. Fortunately, our military strategy has outsmarted our mighty press just as our President has and they'll be left once again to run back to their own war room with their tails between their legs to design once again their own biased press attacks.Couldn't have said it better. My exact sentiments.
To: LBGA
Remember the article about the Delta force raid that (supposedly) went so badly, and how the ferociousness of the Taliban fighters scared our special ops guys??? And yet, 1,000 soldiers on horseback can take a city in 30 minutes. It would seem that the press has been glorifying the wrong side.Amen.

I'd ping the essay compiler and judge, but I forget the handle--RJayne something. This one deserves a prize. As a matter of fact, Jayne was kind enough to offer me space on her website for my My Two Cents essays.

Bob Schiffer's living testimonial to the fact that, among the beltway elite, being a rabid liberal is the only credential you need to be considered a "great journalist".
