LOS ANGELES, Nov 7, 01 (CWNews.com) - A Muslim man has been arrested for allegedly vandalizing statues at Catholic churches in the Los Angeles area.

Emad Ibrahim Saad, 35, of Los Angeles was arraigned on Tuesday and is being held on $70,000 bail. Police say Saad cut off the head of a Virgin Mary statue, cut off the hand of a statue of St. Rita, and stole a statue of Blessed Junipero Serra at St. Augustine Church in Culver City on October 28. They said Muslim magazine(s) were found at the church along with pamphlets that read, "Allah is the only true God."

Witnesses said Saad was trying to distribute Muslim tracts outside the church earlier in the month and was asked to leave.

Saad is also suspected of vandalizing statues of Mary at St. Anselm and St. Raphael churches in Los Angeles, and police are investigating whether he was connected to the vandalism of a tabernacle on October 30.

I'm leaning toward Allah = Satan, rather than the only true God.

This just can't be. After all, Islam means "peace," doesn't it?

There was a Protestant poster cheering such activity on this forum last year, when several Catholic churches in Brooklyn were vandalized. No one criticized him except Catholics.

I hope that kind of idiocy is over and done with now.

The real question being is he fringe or is he the norm?I guess the answer to your question is pretty much dependant on how many Muslims there are in a particular nation. At present there are not enough Muslims in the USA to say this should just be considered righteous anger on his part. Give it time.

Interesting to note, the left was hyperventilating about Mosques being vandalized when that was going on.

Perhaps they'll have a rally now to condemn this incident?

Nah, you know they wont. Callously manipulating the politics of victimization is the priority to most of these people. Not equal protection under the law.

Will this guy be charged with a hate crime or is this politically incorrect? I mean is it a hate crime only if a Christian were to vandalize mosques? Go figure.

Let's revert to the eye-for-an-eye doctrine in settling this one. Start by removing his hand.

I can see your wanting to condemn the Protestant poster equally with the vandal, but when you associate all non-Catholic posters on FR with complicity in vandalism, you're going a little too far off the deep end.

Now, if it was a Mosque from the Beautiful and Peaceful religion of Islam being vandalized, it would be a different story.

Im not aware of any vandalism occuring in Brooklyn due to some sort of religious rivalry between catholics and protestants.

I think you may be trying to demean or belittle this incident, and your reference implies your attempting to diminish something that really should be discussed and addressed.

Its also worth noting I checked the Diocese and affiliated web pages for that area and couldnt find any references to the incidents last year your referring to.

It certainly does have all the elements that usually make the reporters & editors at LA Times, SF Chronicle, or SJ Mercury sit up & take notice - a vicious hate crime committed in the dark of night... hmmm.

You know we all need to realize that some cultures feel threatened by the patriarchal white male hegemony that currently exists in this country.
If you could learn to show some tolerance for people of color, oppressed for millenia by the christian west, you might not be so quick to judgement.
After all, sensitivity to the needs and desires of our fellow hu-persons would help us to realize this is all our fault.

"Until we make reparations to african americans and tribal americans we are to blame for all bad things that happen in the world, and to this country."-Bill Klintoon

I do hope you were being sarcastic, that was the most ridiculous bunch of strung together victimology Ive heard in quite a while. Not to mention an extremely contradictory statement.

If it were not for the policy of openess inherent in Western culture, the very fact is that there would be no Muslims or any other groups in the US to commit these crimes.

In contrast to the "oppressed" cultures, which seem to have an extremely nasty habit of being thousands of times more oppressive, totalitarian, undemocratic and unenlightened than anything ever put forth in America.

Didnt know FR was being rushed by totalitarian communists these days. Perhaps someone should look into this. Then again, you may be being sarcastic, but it was a rather dubious attempt at it.

Don't be silly. Hate crime laws only apply to white Christians. This poor soul is only reacting to the hatred and anger of Americans. Being subjected to the visual assault of numerous American flags was more than he could stand. Have some sympathy, man.

Words from a wise man*: "Trust but verify."

* Ronald Reagan.

As for me, I wouldn't trust them. But we are not yet so badly damaged, for our political "leaders" to have the courage to start rounding them up, and either detaining or shipping the away. That could change, based on further events and verification.
