Actually, it has been reported that the Taliban were having a last ditch attempt to get MORE troops there, not less....sounds like a genuine victory to me.

Paraphrasing from Gen. Omar Bradley: If Hitler had been willing to withdraw in Western Europe, regroup and hit our forces with a serious counteroffensive, he might have won after D-Day. Instead, against the advice of Rommel and his best generals, he ordered his armies not to give an inch (then he killed Rommel). His counteroffensive came much too late, and involved a truly insane strategy of throwing 35 divisions into a position where they were sure to be encircled and routed -- ie, the battle of the bulge.

Gen. Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson trounced union armies up and down the Shenandoah valley by hitting hard and then hitting the road. At Port Republic, he was trying to keep two union armies apart, and his strategy was to split his army, fight just long enough to make the union armies useless for the siege of Richmond, and then head for the hills, literally.

Strategic withdrawls can work. Holding ground is not necessarily the best way to win a war, especially when you face a fluid enemy, as the Taliban do.

I see a plan coming together. Storm the cities, drive the taliban into the mountains for the winter. No supply lines and caves will give out a great IR signiture against the cold snow covered mountains! Can you say "cave plinking"?

The Chinese had BETTER WATCH THEIR P's and Q's if I were THEM!!! The Chinese government is now so OVERBLOATED and CORRUPT it would NOT take all that much METHINKS for someone with a little GILE and the CAJONES to start a Civil war inside that country... and split it into at LEAST four to five different countries... INCLUDING TIBET.....

Well, we definitely know the best way NOT to divide a country is to knock down a couple of their 110 story buildings and kill a few thousand of their civilians.

Whew! For a minute there I was getting ready to surrender to the invading ant aliens like Simpson's Kent Brockman did.

Hey, great minds think alike. Just two hours and 15 minutes after my above comment was posted, Jonah Goldberg also referred to Kent Brockman's surrender to the ants.

Here's the link to the article

And here's an excerpt from Jonah:

One of my favorite scenes in The Simpsons (as longtime readers know) is when Homer is selected to join a space-shuttle mission. News anchor Kent Brockman is scheduled to interview the shuttle crew while Homer and the rest of the crew are in orbit. But just before they "switch live" to the craft, there's a mishap on board. Homer, unaccustomed to weightlessness, has smashed an ant farm they brought with them. When Kent Brockman cuts to the live feed from the shuttle, the garden-variety ants float by the TV-camera lens — momentarily appearing gigantic. Then, they lose the picture.

Brockman, like so many TV newsmen, responds instantly with his gut impressions: "Ladies and gentlemen, er, we've just lost the picture, but, uh, what we've seen speaks for itself. The Corvair spacecraft has been taken over — 'conquered', if you will — by a master race of giant space ants. It's difficult to tell from this vantage point whether they will consume the captive earthmen or merely enslave them. One thing is for certain, there is no stopping them; the ants will soon be here. And I, for one, welcome our new insect overlords. I'd like to remind them that as a trusted TV personality, I can be helpful in rounding up others to... toil in their underground sugar caves."
