Actually, the best thing about this is that if the Taliban are retreating from Mazar-e-Sharif, it makes them very good targets during the withdrawal.

I can EASILY see and understand your point..... The US MILITARY BETTER have a VERY THOROUGH going over that area if I were them!!!!

The Chinese had BETTER WATCH THEIR P's and Q's if I were THEM!!! The Chinese government is now so OVERBLOATED and CORRUPT it would NOT take all that much METHINKS for someone with a little GILE and the CAJONES to start a Civil war inside that country... and split it into at LEAST four to five different countries... INCLUDING TIBET.....

Could this be a STRATEGIC WITHDRAWAL???? If it is, it's an expensive one. They are clearly desperate. Mazar is a big asset to lose.

strategic Taliban withdrawl Nobody gives up territory willingly. A retreat is a retreat and it has been forced on them (if this story is true, of course.)

There were some report(s?) this a.m. that the Taliban had decided to withdraw from Mazar-E-Sharif. There was a thread that contained this information. So maybe that's what this is about.
Who knows, but I wouldn't get overly jubilant about it yet. I'll be happy when they get Kandahar and Omar's head and bin Laden's head are on sticks.

Omar Sharif to move back home before New Years day!

"Nobody gives up territory willingly. A retreat is a retreat and it has been forced on them (if this story is true, of course.)"
A strategic withdrawl is when you pull your forces out of an exposed position and move to more defendable ground. A retreat is when you are forced from ground by your enemy's direct actions. It's a subtle difference, true, but it does exist.

Even if this takes years, I can wait. In our "instant society" where everything is "now", this war needs our patience. Slowly, deiliberately remove the enemy, or fire fast and furious and nail a few camel butts? I support our Commander in Chief.

There's just nothing like a retreat for killing enemies.
Confusion,fear,panic,let the slaughter begin.

No fun shooting in the back. Either need to shoot from the front or from above. I like above. :)

War is a game of supply. Taliban forces could not be re-supplied there. Retreat or die was their alternative.

The Isreali's pulled a gutsy move aways back. They let the Syrian armor (or was it Egyptian? don't care at the moment) penetrate their lines, then closed the hole behind the enemy advance. Then roving bands of Isreali armor came up and cut off the enemy in valleys and ravines making it easier to smash the enemy spearheads. The enemy had no way to advance or retreat. Game over. It was quite a gutsy op.. and the Talidweebs may have learned from it. The NA guys had best look out for their backsides out there.

C'mon, this isn't news. The big story is that the re-count of the re-count of the re-count of the re-count of the Florida Ballots is about to be made public./sarcasm off LETS ROLL!
During the First Afghan War, the Brits conquered all the major cities like Kandahar and Kabul. They never gained the allegiance of all the tribes and consequently their main army in Kabul was wiped out. One man returned to tell the tale. I wish it could be a cakewalk but something tells me it isnt going to be that way.
