Sept. 11 Charity Aids Group Defending Terror Suspects

A charity fund established to help victims of the Sept. 11th attacks made a grant of $171,000 to a group defending eight men held in the terrorist attacks on New York and Washington.

A grant of $171,000 from September 11th Fund, which is affiliated with United Way, was given to Legal Aid Society, a group aiding in the legal defense of eight suspects detained in Brooklyn, N.Y., as a result of the government's investigation into the terrorist attacks

"Instead of helping out the victims, they're actually helping out potentially suspected terrorists," said Dan Rene of the legal watchdog group National Legal and Policy Center (NLPC).

With all the questions about the fund-raising on behalf of victims, this is a very shocking development," said Rene. "I think a lot of people will be very outraged

One official with September 11th Fund refused to comment, and other officials did not immediately respond to inquiries.

In its Oct. 3rd announcement, September 11 Fund stated the grant to the Legal Aid Society would be used to "provide immediate direct legal services to the thousands of lower-income individuals working in or near the World Trade Center (including cleaning staff, waiters, messengers, vendors, etc.) who were directly affected by the terrorist attack."

According to Rene, September 11th Fund announced on Oct. 3 the $171,000 grant to Legal Aid Society was ostensibly to "provide emergency civil legal assistance to low-income attack victims."

Ken Boehm and Peter Flaherty of the NLPC wrote in a letter Thursday to September 11th Fund, "At a time when the public is questioning why so few of the victims have received aid they desperately need from groups that have raised hundreds of millions of dollars, it is disturbing that the Legal Aid Society rushed to provide free civil help to the detainees."

The letter continued, "We believe the public will be outraged, and justifiably so, to learn that funds from the September 11th Fund are going to support a group which is apparently providing civil legal help to those jailed on violations of immigration law in the wake of September 11 terrorist attacks."

The government has not released the identity of the eight men detained on immigration violations. The men are in solitary confinement in the Special Housing Unit of Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn

United Way and Hollywood celebrities have come under fire in recent days because of questions regarding the financial distribution of September 11th Fund. Actress Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell, who participated in fund-raising efforts, have previously called for a greater accounting of where the money has gone.

Thanks for the ping.

This further reinforces the reasons why I have never given one thin dime to the United Way... and why I never will.

The Red Cross should be indicted for fraud and that goes for the United Way too. But so far our gutless politicians have done nothing. Class action lawsuit, anyone?

I don't think O'Reilly will cover this tonight as the story came out so late, he probably will want to triple check this story before his show so he can make sure he has all of the facts straight on this. He can't afford to get suckered on the wrong track now on this.

This rings completely true to me.

The United Way has supported the Legal Aid Society before, so the fact that a fund of the United Way was sending money Legal Aid's way should be completely unshocking.

Further, the Legal Aid Society is a favorite of everyone's favorite, Ramsey Clark. Many of the senior attorneys at Legal Aid came from Clark's practice, and many of the lawyers, employed by the various umbrella groups that Clark is a mouthpiece for, come from the Legal Aid Society. They are kindred spirits, and work closely together.

Ramsey Clark's group has long taken charitable donations under the guise of high-minded sounding ideals (such as legal aid for the poor, or funding alternative sources of media for the underprivileged) and used them for criminal defense of terrorists and subversives (such as Mumia) or for distributing communist propaganda and instruction to prisoners in jail.

Last year, for example, hundreds of thousands IIRC flowed from the Fidelity Charitable Gift Fund to the coffers of groups directly controlled by the International Action Center (another Clark group). This money went, in part, to pay for the preparations for the protest against our war on September 29th (as well as the activities I described above).

Not only would I not doubt that Legal Aid got money from the September 11th Fund, I would be surprised if they didn't.

(Clark has also been involved with defending some of Bin Laden's men before, btw).

Outrageous! I did a little research on United Way, here is the result:

Established by United Way of New York City and The New York Community Trust

How the World is Responding

As of October 26, the September 11th Fund has received nearly $334 million in pledges. Included in that figure is $150 million in pledges generated by the Tribute to Heroes September 11th Telethon Fund. Individuals, corporations and communities from all points of the globe have contributed to The September 11th Fund.

The September 11th Fund makes grants to established nonprofit agencies that work at the frontlines, providing support and services to victims, their families, and others affected by the September 11th tragedy. These nonprofit agencies in turn give the assistance victims need.
