Haunting memories / Oliver North

Subject: Haunting memories

At a UNC lecture the other day they played a video of Oliver North during the Iran-Contra deals during the Reagan administration. There was Ollie in front of God and Country getting the third degree. But what he said was stunning. He was being drilled by some senator; 'Did you not recently spend close to $60,000 for a home security system?'

Oliver replied, 'Yes I did sir.'

The senator continued, trying to get a laugh out of the audience, 'Isn't

this just a little excessive?' 'No sir,' continued Oliver.

'No. And why not?'

'Because the life of my family and I were threatened.'

'Threatened? By who.'

'By a terrorist, sir.'

'Terrorist? What terrorist could possibly scare you that much?'

'His name is Osama bin Laden.' At this point the senator tried to repeat the name, but couldn't pronounce it, which most people back then probably couldn't. A couple of people laughed at the attempt. Then the senator continued.

'Why are you so afraid of this man?'

'Because sir, he is the most evil person alive that I know of.'

'And what do you recommend we do about him?'

'If it were me I would recommend an assassin team be formed to eliminate him and his men from the face of the earth.'

The senator disagreed with this approach and that was all they showed of

the clip.

Click my link in post #9. Snopes has a write-up about it. The only references they could find to Ollie's being threatened concerned Abu Nadal and Quadafi.

If there's any truth to it we will never know now.

The Dimocraps would sure like to have you believe it.

Alright I will concede that the quote about OBL is probably inaccurate but it is still interesting that OBL's brother was associated with Iran-Contra. That is a link that shouldn't be ignored.

I'm not interested in what anybody would like me to believe, but I think the American people have a right to know what their goverment is doing. This trend to hide everything our politicans do under the cloud of national security is not in the interests of freedom.

I remember the hearings, and although I don't have access to the transcripts, I'm pretty sure North did mention Osama Bin Laden by name as the person he was concerned about when he put in the security system.

Your two FReepmails to me show you to be a disrupting weasel who hasn't the courage to state his convictions in an open forum. Your reference to my mother is typical of liberal swine who can't muster an arguement or defend a position. I hope your stay at FR is short lived.

I remember well the testimony regarding the security system. It was Abu Nidal who was referred to, not bin Laden.

I just looked up 'Kapali' and got 'no freeper by that name' response. Jimrob must be up and at it early this morning. Kudos, now if we could only deal with the terrorists the same way.

So do I. Nidal definitely, Laden could have been mentioned by it doen't register. I bought his book, "Oliver North" that was published in record time, almost before the hearings were over. Olie must have made a few bucks on the book, as I recall it hit the best sellers list. Shows how corrupt the Democrates were back then and still are.

I'll have to search for it and see what is said on the subject. Anyone else have the book handy?

If memory serves me, I believe you are correct. I watched the hearings in their entirety at my father's request. His first cousin, Gaston Sigur, was one of the first to testify.

I am glad his stay was brief. I would be even more glad if the Ollie North statement panned out as true.

I found the 'book'! It's title is 'taking a stand' and is a complete transcript of his testimony. Over 750 pages so it may take me awhile to find the references to the 'terrorists'.

There was no "massive corruption". There was a witch hunt by democrats in Congress. And this witch hunt is not comaprable to the alleged witch hunt described by democrats against Clinton corruption. The reason is simple : Colonel North was not interested in enriching himself and deceiving others to save his hide. He was motivated out of patriotism to save the lives of intelligence officers and Contras.

One can jaywalk to suit their own purposes of convenience, or one can jaywalk to rush and save a life. The intents are completely different. Those that can't see it, don't want to see it. As far as I'm concerned, such people are with the terrorists.

Yeah, some intelligence officers may have posed as drug dealers to infiltrate the cartels. So what? It's their job.

We all wanna know everything. But Clintonian antics notwithstanding, there is some information that must be protected for national security reasons, and I'd trust Oliver North's opinion on what that info is before I'd trust Patrick Leahy, Jim McDermott, or Robert Torricelli.

Did you receive a certificate in numbskullism? North was saving lives from leftists in Congress! They were for Ortega, he was for the Contras. They were responsible for blowing the cover of intelligence officers abroad which led to their murders, he was shredding documents that kept their cover.
