Tasty Weird Foods

Just to take a break from politics for a bit, I was wondering if there are others out there who also have a taste for weird exotic foods. I thought I was one of a kind in this regard until I read a newspaper article that said that there are many folks who have a hankering for exotic foods that others may find yucky.

I've eaten sea urchin eggs directly from sea urchins, cooked ox tails (or "tako" as it is called in the Phillipines), raw quail eggs, all manner of spicy European sausages such as the very garlicky Kabanosi, blood sausages in Argentina, alligator meat, and I don't even have to be drunk to eat the worm in the Mezcal bottle (although I usually am since I have to drink my way to reach it).

So what are your favorite "yucky" foods? I am always on the lookout for new exotic foods so I will be most interested in reading your comments and food suggestions.

Hmm that's right it has kinda gone by the wayside.

Beefalo used to be easily available in lots of supermarkets. I remember a few years ago there was a lot of excitement about emu meat. However, it never panned out. The public didn't accept eating a bird that tasted just like beef even though it is incredibly low in cholesterol.

The weirdest thing I do...Wendy's french fries dipped in frosties! I've been doing that since I was a tot!

Now that reminds me of a sandwich called an "Art Buchwald" that used to be served at a DC pub (can't remember the name)......cream cheese and jelly with bacon on raisin toast.....mmmmmmm!

"THE DAY AFTER" Corn chips (FRITO LAY?) and butter milk, in a bowl. It's so yummmmy!

Penn & Teller have a travelling Magic Show documentary "series" on Canadian TV. They had some great "foods" in Beijing, from the street vendors.

I cooked up a wee Haggis this weekend and bar-b-qued a goat and a lamb. Goat is Good! Around 50 people tried the Haggis and only two didn't like it. Two refused, saying they were vegetarian, to which I replied- So was the sheep!

Yup! That's exactly what it means. I opened up some female sea urchins after diving for them with my knife and ate the eggs right off the knife. Actually it's quite good and despite your revulsion, it is a great survival tool if you are ever stranded on an island.

Back on Okinawa in the early 50s, our Control Tower crew used to go to a very small hut called the EM Club and get a case of San Miguel (MacArthur beer) for a nickel a bottle.

After a while we'd get the munchies and the only thing the Okinawan who ran the joint had was canned octopus.

Got to be right tasty after six brews.

Oh My God! You are talking about human placenta, aren't you? I thought the eggs-with-ducks-inside, the marrow-slurp, the fish-head-dumplings, and so forth were bad enough, but 'Placenta Cocktail' is obscene.

Yes, human placenta! Can you believe it? Some of the "Mother Earth" types actually save their placenta, stir fry it and serve it to company. GAG!!

One of the most intriguing tastes I've ever had was Corn Smut down in Mexico. They saute it and put it in a soft flour tortilla with a tomatillo-green chile sauce. Down there they call it Huitlacoche. it has a very earthy taste like truffles. Sounds horrible but it's good.

Gorgonzola with bread sticks......it's a little "skinty" but delicious........ P.S.....that sushi dish sounds delicious......
