Sheriff's Deputy Shot; Suspect Killed
A sheriff's deputy in eastern Arizona is hospitalized in critical condition after being shot while trying to arrest a suspect. The suspect was in turn shot and killed.
The confrontation occurred in the town of Eager around midnight.
Department of Public Safety spokesman Officer Steve Volden says the Apache County sheriff's deputy was shot twice in the head. He was airlifted to a Phoenix hospital.
His name wasn't immediately released.
Volden says the deputy was among several officers who were attempting to arrest 58-year-old William Milton Cooper of Eagar.
Volden says Cooper had been armed with a handgun. He says details of the shooting will be released later at a news conference. DPS was called in to investigating the shooting.

Sorry if this has already been posted. I searched on Cooper and the article's title.
You don't suppose the Feds will blame Cooper for the Anthrax attacks?

William Cooper is Dead...
And? Why is this different than any other shooting?
To: Jack Barbara
Was Cooper a militia type or just run of the mill low-life?
To: Tunehead54
Cooper was a big-time anti-gov patriot radical from mid '90s. He had a large following on radio and published a number of books. My familiarity is only nominal, but I recall his reputation as being fringe fringe, but with a significant following.

Tunehead, is there a difference? :-)

Bumping for more detail.

There have been several hints in the media that the Feds were looking at left-coast militia groups as a possible source of the anthrax mailings. This raid on Cooper's compound seems to fit the bill.

I don't care what his politics were.
If he used a gun in any situation except in self defense or to foil a criminal act, then I'm glad they're mopping his insides off of some sidewalk.

Maybe they can spike his home with anthrax spores now that he's dead. That'll take the heat off the terrorists for awhile.

I did a search, there is a web site for this man. williamcooper.com .It tells what he and his family have been going thru. I didn't read the whole update just thought some might be interested.

Yikes, that seems to be a very unlikely scenario. AND... if they had a warrant for something like the anthrax letters, wouldn't the officals used some type of FEDERAL swat team?
