Dangerous Times in NYC - A Personal Experience
Vanity

Posted on 11/06/2001 10:29:07 AM PST by Fujiwara

So I'm going home last night on the NYC subway (#1 Train Uptown Broadway Local) when a large (280-300 lbs)agitated, African American man boards the train. The man is wearing a Palestianian head-dress (picture Arafat's typical head piece).

He begins loudly talking to himself aboout how he is going "to have to kill some one". Frightened passengers begin to move away - suddenly he launches an unprovoked barrage of punches against a seated passenger.

Several other passengers momentarily subdue the bad guy - train pulls into the station - bad guy attempts to non-chalantly leave the the train and the station.

So I follow him while talking to 911 on my cell phone. Police arrive quickly, bad guy resists, ends up with a face full of pepper spray - but is subdued quickly and efficiently by NY's Finest.

So the police begin to empty this guys pockets on the street. They find: a copy of the Koran, a book called "Wives of the Prophet", prayer beads, etc. Then they check his waistband where they find A LOADED 9 MILLIMETER HANDGUN, with one in the pipe, gun has no safety.

Later I learn the guy has adopted a musilim AKA, was talking repeatedly about going to Afghanistan to kill people, better yet - he is a convicted murderer so he can be taken at his word.

So what's the point? Do I think this guy is a member of al queda ? No, not even they would want an idiot like this. Do I think he went out last night looking to kill someone for no reason other than craziness and religious zealotry? YES, I do - I saw that in his eyes and his behaviour.

Worse still, I think there are many, many more like him. If I had any doubts that the enemy is among us those doubts are now long gone. Yours should be too.

better yet-he is a convicted murderer

Sad, isn't it, that a convicted murderer is walking the streets, probably intent upon murdering again? Our lawmakers and courts need to re-think the entire criminal justice system.

If we can't even protect ourselves from common criminals, how can we expect to protect ourselves from fanatical, religious zealots who freely live among us?

The headdress is called a kaffeyeh. And don't panic next time. They are only worn by "peaceful" muslims. (He-he-he). The guy was probably FBI or working undercover detail for the Office of Homeland Security. Pretty dedicated to take a face full of pepper spray rather than reveal his identity and blow his cover. A lesser man would have flashed his badge on the spot.

Glad you're OK, but if you chose to live in the cesspool that is NYC, you reap the benefits - including the benefit of politicians who will not allow you to arm yourself to be able to defend yourself against the whackjobs like this that roam the streets.

What model of 9mm doesn't have a safety and how did you detect that from observation? I assume the police did not let you inspect the weapon....

Good point. One of the little reported aspects of the American-Musilim community is how much conversion to Islam happens in the American Prison System. Particularly among African American men. I have no way of knowing, but it wouldn't surprise me if this guy went to jail for murder, converted to Islam while in prison. Groups like the Nation of Islam, The Musilim Brotherhood, etc. are a major force in US Prisons, effectively function like gangs or crime syndicates. This is an extremely dangerous trend.

We have to prevent the American Prison System from becoming breeding grounds for Musilim Extremists.

Anywhere but NYC and I would say that this guy was nuts.

Glad to hear that everything turned out ok. These types of stories will opo up from tinme to time because people are very on edge. This guy has issues beyond being a muslim. He would have done something similar had the events of 9/11 not taken place but he may have carried it out differently. Nuts is still nuts people. Yes there are more loonies then ever but the city as a whole seems more peaceful then ever.

LIke I said glad to hear this storry turned out to have a safe ending. Thanks for sharing and I hope others will point on things that they spot to keep everyone aware and informed.

Alert Carolyn McCarthy.

She hasn't been alert since being deprived of oxygen in the birth canal.

Several other passengers momentarily subdue the bad guy . . .

This is the real problem in a nutshell. If you are in a position to subdue someone like this, make sure the police have to peel him off the floor with a spoon.

As far as NYC gun laws are concerned, don't let them stand in your way. If you are afraid to carry an unlicensed firearm, there is an effective substitute. I would recommend a can of hornet spray and a lighter. If you have a problem with someone in a confined space like this and must resort to any means to protect yourself, the combination of these two can be used to project a long stream of flame at the assailant. This spray is intended to be used on a hornet's nest from a safe distance, so when you use it in this manner you can probably strike someone a full subway car length away from you without having dispersal effects from the flame on adjoining passengers.

Even if you don't actually hit your assailant and he manages to flee the scene, DNA evidence may be obtained from the enormous quantities of piss and crap that he leaves behind.

If the assailant is not armed with a gun but is approaching you from a short distance with a hand weapon, then a brief burst without the lighter will soak him down a bit. That way he will ignite in a particularly impressive manner when you use the flame.

Glad everyone was safe. Unfortunately, it was the constant repetition of scenes like this on the subways and streets of NYC that led Bernard Goetz many years ago to (illegally) carry a weapon, which he used in justified self defense against some thugs in the subway, for which he was convicted. I have a woman friend who carries a 9 mm (with which she is *very* proficient) whenever she travels, because she believes that even a firearm conviction is worth keeping her life and/or her virtue secure from murder or rape. It really is too bad that in NYC only the criminals are armed, and I sadly must agree with the writer who said, "Welcome to a post-Giuliani NY."

"a can of hornet spray and a lighter"

Foaming lye based oven cleaner doesn't have the reach, but it doesn't require a source of ignition, and it doesn't quit burning- little in the face and eyes goes a loooooooong way towards adjusting a naughty person's attitude...

"What model of 9mm doesn't have a safety and how did you detect that from observation? I assume the police did not let you inspect the weapon...." Police told me - they were a little freaked out and I think were trying to find a way of conveying the seriousness of the situation - apparently they take 9 Mil's more seriously than a run of the mill .22 or .25 which they see everyday and think of as standard bad guy issue.

I don't know much about handguns but the police said that many 9 Mil's don't have safetys - including (interestingly) the Glocks carried by NYC Cops

How many African-American men do you suppose are sent to prison for small-time drug dealing? Had they never had to serve time, they most likely never would have heard the Muslim pitch and wouldn't be potential members of Al-Qaeda. Chalk it up as another unintended consequence of the nightmarish and never-ending "war on drugs."
