I am presuming they are "unguided". What kind of accuracy can they get from 30,000 feet?

Just saw this on TV. They use a parachute to float them down in order to give the plane time to clear the area.

"The BLU-82 combines a watery mixture of ammonium nitrate and aluminum with air, then ignites the mist for a huge explosion that incinerates everything within up to 600 yards.""What kind of accuracy can they get from 30,000 feet?"
With a blast radius of 600 yards, what kind of accuracy do you need?

I am presuming they are "unguided". What kind of accuracy can they get from 30,000 feet? I'm not sure, but I think they kick it out the back of a C-130 from a relatively low altitude.
How would you like to see that monstrosity on a parachute coming at you? Wow!!

Bomb descends by small parachute. With 15,000 pounds of bang, you do not need much accuracy!

I'm sure that with the size of those bad boys,it doesn't matter whether they're guided or not! They'll hit something!

I am presuming they are "unguided". What kind of accuracy can they get from 30,000 feet? They drop the bomb from 6000' according to the article (last paragraph). While that is still pretty high, with this kind of power, accuracy is of secondary importance.

I am presuming they are "unguided". What kind of accuracy can they get from 30,000 feet? The article didn't say "30,000 feet." It said that minimum altitiude was 6,000 feet.
IR and GPS technology is very new in terms of dropping bombs. Ever heard of bomb sights? Go back to sleep or a few read WWII novels. If you can't read, then you can watch war documentaries on tv.

I am presuming they are "unguided". What kind of accuracy can they get from 30,000 feet? Pushed out the back of a cargo plane at fairly low altitude....
Also explains why they wern't used before...as need to make shure all ground to air is adequately supressed.
Those cargo planes are slow flying and vunerable
Hopefully the fuel air bombs will be demonstrated next...

You ask, "What kind of accuracy can they get from 30,000 feet?" You didn't make it to the last paragraph, apparently, which says, "They are dropped from a C-130 cargo plane flying at least 6,000 feet off the ground, to avoid the bomb's massive shock wave."

As has been said here many times in the replies, the bomb hovers in on a parachute, close to ground and then goes boom! The delivery is dropped at 6,000 feet or higher (not 30,000).
What hasn't been said here is a comment about the "overpressure." This thingy makes a 1,000 lb sq in overpressure which--aside from those things not blown to small burning pieces--crushes everything crushable to death. That includes all vertebrates, from the surface down to very, very deep (how far?--some expert FReepers here know.)

What kind of accuracy can they get from 30,000 feet? Read the article... they are dropped from about 6000 feet and with a blast that big, you don't need to be accurate.
