What Is The Best 12 Gauge Shotgun Load for Home Defense?
Me ^ | November 5, 2001 | NoControlling LegalAuthority

I would like opinions on the best shotgun shell load for use in a 12 Gauge Shotgun when being used for home defense. I have heard of using bird shot, buck shot and slugs - standard or magnum loads. I have heard of progressive loading such as first round-bird shot, second round-buckshot, third round-slugs.

Considerations seem to include whether you want to blow the door or wall down in the process of stopping the intruder.

Lemme guess - you signed up today and bumped an old home defense thread with a call to use an illegal weapon in order to salt FR with some posts to use against it later.

Leave the chamber empty; if you find a burglar busily loading up your stuff, you will have fun watching him load up his pants when you rack the slide.

I have a couple of old Winchester Model 12's. They make a sound when loading that will most certainly loosen the bowels of any intruder.

You figure anything you shoot in your house is probably going to be within 15 feet so in my opinion it doesn't really matter what shot size you use. Once you pull the trigger, your next major concern is how to clean up the mess......

Remington 870 is best in that department.

My Winchester Defender does a pretty good job as well.;

A cinder block just sitting there will react VERY differently than a cinder block holding up a house. The former will disintegrate rapidly in a delightful manner; the latter will just go "ow, stop that".

Probably makes no difference. If you inside your home any load of shot will do the trick since it will be at very close range. A slug is probably not a good idea since you are more likely to miss.

Ask lugsoul what prompted him to resurrect this. I just saw the title on the "latests posts" page; didn't check to see that the thread was two years old.

At close range, you are not more likely to miss with a slug; shot does not spread appreciably within normal indoor distances.

Actually started up by the pulled post before lugsoul, by a banned troll.

I think that removed post (156?) revived it. I saw it in the forum, click and posted before I realized I had posted on the same thread many months ago.

Obviously, rounds intended for serious "social work".

Some twerp who signed up today resurrected this thread by posting that his weapon of choice would be a sawed-off shotgun and he would just blow someone's face away with it. He probably wanted to slip a post into FR that he could use later as evidence of our conservative gun-nut derangement. However, his MO is pretty obvious by now.

My fav: #2 steel. A bit much indoors and sort ranges but also great for longer shots and outdoors.

Thanks to all for the replies. My question to start this thread was in 2001.

Some good, some not so good advise. Any quality pump shotgun will do, preferrably 12 gauge. Thirty inches of piano wire with crimped on split shot fishing sinkers is devistating if you load your own. If you don't hand load, use light target loads to protect from over penitration. If the wound doesn't kill the surgery to remove 720 pellits will.
Slugs and buckshot can be lethal to your neighbors. Don't use them for home defense.
Can you say CHEESE PLEASE ????

Urban Myth. Birdshot at close range is like a slug. It will handily penetrate sheetrock like it isn't there.

I knew a guy who took a good half of a guy's face off with birdshot and left part of it on the wall. The slimey creep still managed to get outside and collapse in a neighbors front yard. He died later. This guy was a real piece of work. He would sneak into a house, sometimes repeatedly, and open up a bunch of escape routes. He would then molest females of any age in the house. After his third or fourth visit my acquaintance waited up for him. Anyone from Bucks County PA might remember this creep. He was active in the very early 70s.
