New strain of HIV is resistant to main drug

A new type of Aids virus can quickly turn resistant to one of the most effective drugs used to treat the disease. Scientists discovered the new strain among 603 HIV-positive patients who were so recently infected they had not yet even been given drugs. Their findings suggest the much-feared increase in drug-resistant forms of HIV is beginning to take root with a strain that has an in-built capacity to resist treatment with AZT, the principal anti-Aids treatment.

Although drug-resistant strains of HIV were discovered in 1992 they were almost invariably found in patients having treatment with one or more anti-viral drugs. While drug resistance has been seen in HIV-infected patients before, it has seldom been seen in untreated patients.

The latest strain was evidently transmitted among people who have never been exposed to AZT, suggesting that drug resistance is spreading rapidly within HIV-positive people who may not even know they are infected.

The latest study, in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, found several genetic mutations in the new strain of HIV made the virus perfectly poised for further mutations that conferred full AZT-resistance. Dr Garcia-Lerma said doctors would test patients for this new strain and report its prevalence so the general rise in drug-resistance could be monitored.

If such strains become widespread, that will be a severe setback in Aids treatment.

Very interesting posts. I heard your theory for the first time from a MD who taught pathology at a local college. I was in undergrad and worked in a nice bar and resturant going through school. The path teacher got really drunk and essentially said the same things you have posted. But it was 1989!! I didn't think much of it until tonight. A woman I know was in the peace corp in the mid-90's in Africa. The conditions at the hospitals were unbelievable. She said that they had a real problem with biohazard disposal and many times threw the trash out the window. She volunteered to pick up trash in the yard around the hospital. Wonder what she found? Yep, hypodermic needles. I think she only volunteered once for that job.

You're not going to believe this, by 1989 is when I first read about it. My father, an M.D., passed along to me a local medical newsletter which he said nonchalantly had an article I might find interesting. It was an interview of Peter Duesberg.

The reason people are catching these new drug resistant super strains of HIV, is primarily because of the promiscuity of HIV+ people who are already on these drugs.
I warned about this years ago in my HIV support group and the gay members acted as if I was nuts. They were still out there messing around. Incredible.

What it tells us Senator is that since the HIV drugs do not eliminate the virus the virus does what viruses do and mutates. The mutated virus is them transmited in the abnormal and normal ways.

The answer is simple but impossible to do, and we all know what that is.
