It's the sort of question that, way back in spring semester, would have made for a good late-night bull session in a college dorm room: If an atomic bomb were about to be detonated in Manhattan, would police be justified in torturing the terrorist who planted it to learn its location and save the city? But today, the debates are starting up in the higher reaches of the federal government. And this time, the answers really matter.

I see no reason at all for the great debates that have occurred on this forum over this subject. Torture is no longer needed for any reason and carrots and sticks only work on people who have some rational reason to remain alive.

Truth drugs on the other hand are cheep and quick and the information attained a great deal more likely to be factual.

If theb CIA and FBI need a law to allow them to use this means then congress should get off their butts and do their job.

I hope that those who would legitimize the use of torture in this worthy cause would pause to consider a future Democrat administration possessing those same new tools which are given to this particular noble patriotic administration now in place. Tools that can be used for evil WILL be used for evil, if only because these incumbent good guys will not always be the government and some of them, with the passage of time, will turn out to be not so good guys

Truth serum is not cruel or inhumane. Do it! Torture might convince them to talk, but it will not convince them to tell the truth.

" Truth drugs on the other hand are cheep and quick and the information attained a great deal more likely to be factual."

Actually this is not true. Please provide the names of so-called "truth drugs" that actually make someone tell the truth.

I went under the knife once and Sodium Pentathol did a thorough job on me. Nobody had to even ask me questions. Embarrasing!  ;-)
