Anthrax: Man Arrested

Sky News

November 4, 2001

A man has been arrested after FBI agents investigating anthrax attacks searched his apartment.

They raided at least two apartments in Trenton, New Jersey.

Three of the letters contaminated with the potentially deadly spores were posted from Trenton.

Another case

The development came as anthrax was discovered at a third US post centre in New Jersey. State officials say one worker is already suspected of suffering from the skin form of the disease.

Witnesses said the arrest followed a three-hour search by FBI and immigration agents of an apartment where four "Middle Eastern" men were living.

The arrested man, identified by his brother Ilyas Chaudry as Allah Rakha, was understood to have been detained by US immigration authorities. FBI agents seized several bags of potential evidence from the flat.

Known source

Two other people were reported to have been detained in areas near the Trenton post office, which has emerged as the only known source of the anthrax contamination.

Four people have died and 13 others have been infected in what President George W Bush said was "a second wave of terrorist attacks upon our country".

Human experiment

In Britain, the Health and Safety Executive was reported to be planning an experiment, using human volunteers, in which spores mimicing anthrax will be released in a post sorting office to simulate a possible biological attack.

An HSE spokeswoman: "The whole point of this exercise is to discover how and why anthrax becomes airborne."

Postal workers in several countries, including the UK, were issued with gloves as a precaution against anthrax.

NBC tape sent to Giuliani contained anthrax

November 4, 2001 Posted: 1:06 PM EST (1806 GMT)

NEW YORK (CNN) -- New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani confirmed Sunday that a tape sent by NBC News anchorman Tom Brokaw's office to City Hall contained anthrax.

Giuliani said the tape was sent in the first week of October, before Brokaw's assistant tested positive for the cutaneous form of the disease.

Giuliani said the tape sent by NBC was dropped off at the City Hall police desk, then was picked up by two people, including his chief of staff, Tony Carbonetti.

"Tony handled it, watched it," Giuliani said.

The mayor did not elaborate on what was on the tape, nor did he say why NBC News sent the tape to his office.

After the NBC case was reported, the tape was submitted for testing several times beginning October 23, and final results have turned up positive, he said.

Giuliani said none of the people who handled the tape have shown any symptoms, which usually occur within a week of exposure. No one is being treated with the antibiotic Cipro, he said.

Environmental testing for anthrax at City Hall has already been conducted since the tape was delivered last month, and results have been negative, he said.

But, Giuliani said, "We'll test again and go into more places in more detail."

The matter is still being investigated.

So far, 17 people have been confirmed to be infected with anthrax, with four confirmed deaths from the more serious inhaled form of the disease

Anthrax traces found at Washington VA hospital

November 3, 2001 Posted: 8:10 PM EST (0110 GMT)

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A mailroom in the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center has tested positive for anthrax, the federal agency reported Saturday.

The mailroom is located in a hospital that houses 250 patients but is not near patient areas, said Phil Budahn, the VA's media relations director. But, he added, hospital officials are keeping "a close eye on patients."

Swabs were taken in the mailroom October 30 because the hospital receives its mail from the main Brentwood branch post office in Washington, the facility that processed an anthrax-laden letter sent to Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle. Two Brentwood postal employees have died of inhalation anthrax, and two others are hospitalized with the same disease.

Of the 22 swabs, one was positive, Budahn said. Administrators closed the mailroom, he said.

Five mailroom employees have been on antibiotics since October 25, and investigators have not found evidence that anthrax has spread at the hospital, he said. "There is absolutely no indication this is a problem beyond the mailroom," Budahn said.

Hospital administrators at present are not considering moving patients, Budahn said.

Oh man would I love to listen to that but my puter is acting up, old and slow donchaknow. I'll listen when I get my new one in a week or so.

It sure sounds weird about the emergency team being ready Sept 10th though. Something was going on!

This is totally out of left field and I'm not suggesting I know anything, but has anyone heard whether this person that died without a trace has been or is considered a suspect in the mailings? That may be very easy to rule out quickly, but I don't think we can take anything for granted.

That branch was moved east on Route One to Texas Avenue.

Thanks for your correction. (I'm flagging aristeides since he was the one who asked.) Texas Avenue looks pretty far away.

If the Spiegel article is correct that there's a post office near 1001 N. Olden, I don't know which they mean. If the Circle Branch is gone, the two closest (according to USPS site) would be

Fort Dix Branch, 6038 W 9th St, Trenton, NJ 08640, about a mile from 1001 N. Olden,
or Trenton Downtown Station, 20 S Montgomery St, Trenton, NJ 08608, a little farther than that,
or Trenton Station E, 1137 Hamilton Ave, Trenton, NJ 08629, about the same distance as Downtown.

My German's really rusty, but I'd interpret In der Gegend um das Postamt von Trenton wurden auch mindestens zwei Wohnungen durchsucht as "In the area around the Trenton post office, also at least three apartments were seached." Gegend I think means neighborhood, but also general area. In der nähe would mean, like, more close neighborhood. And the Trenton Times article suggested the FBI was very interested in a drop box near to the 1001 N. Olden. So I'd suspect the perps didn't go to a post office to mail the letters.

Are the FEDs claiming that the Florida anthrax came from NJ? Something still doesn't add up.

The FBI was asking the Trenton suspects if they "had any friends in Florida." This was reported in the Trenton Times.

There was actually a blue collection box directly in front of the apartment. They did test the box in front of the apartment. Results not known.

Ooops, didn't see your post 102 before I posted 144. (This up and down thing with FR makes it hard to read anything!) You know the post offices better than I do.

So there is a blue drop box right in front of 1001 N. Olden? Maybe that's the one the FBI was watching.

That's terrible. Very shocking but it seems that intend to impose many laws on the citizens and having the ME terrorists here makes it very convenient.

OTOH, re the blue drop box, now I remember the Daily News article said the eyewitness saw the man drop the ziploc bag in his car.

The neighbor, who asked not to be identified, told The Associated Press he saw one of the men now in federal custody carrying a "Ziploc bag" with the letters. He said the man was holding it away from his body and "placed it real slow" onto the passenger seat of his car.

So maybe we're getting all hung up here on drop boxes and nearest post offices for no reason, if the perp was driving somewhere to mail it.

Go the the thread above and and you will see that the CIA planned on these terror attacks occuring in America and accepted them as a necessary evil in achieving globalism

I know it's obvious that they knew much because the WTC was already attacked in 1993, they had every reason to start deporting enemy foreigners then. Now with 6000 killed they still won't deport them, but will impose some serious restrictions on every American. Do you see a solution?

Serratia marcescens was used in my microbiology lab as a means to simulate a controlled epidemic using an infected piece of peppermint candy. We all washed our hands with a 2% solution of mercuric chloride after swabbing and streaking the agar plates. The red pigment is unmistakeable on an agar plate. We made no assumptions about Serratia being a saprophyte. Like loaded firearms, we treat all of them as dangerous in the lab.

Am I missing something in the logic here.

And at the risk of getting flamed, I am growing ever more in favor of closing our borders----tight!

Thanks for the ping.

The "nicest" interpretation that could be placed upon this is that the FEMA team went to NYC on Sept. 10 for some other reason (training, etc) so fortunately it was there to assist in the rescues.

More ominously, there could have been suspicions but the feds didn't want to "alarm" anybody. However if the fed policy had been to issue an alert for each suspected danger, I wonder whether for the last several months we would have been seeing alert after alert every few days just like we have since 9/11.

The US isn't the only place that's seeing anthrax mail attacks, and even if nobody but people with airtight security credentials could cross into or out of the USA henceforth, such attacks could still happen overseas. Al-Qaeda is all over the world.

Thank you.

Sometimes I just do not understand how easily people can forget, ignore, or just plain let stupidity reign. What is it going to take for our government to do the one thing it really is supposed to do----protect it's citizens? And "Oh My Gosh" we may even hurt some feelings in saving our lives.

My personal opinion---sticks and stones (and suicide airliners and Anthrax) will break our bones, but names (and political correctness) may kill us because we let it.

I would love to protect the whole world, but charity begins at home. Can we start with our first responsibility, our own citizens? Closing our borders will obviously not protect the rest of the world, but leaving them open is not doing much to protect the the world either.

Makes me wonder who is spreading this anthrax disease. Especially when this was predicted two years ago on a tv documentary.
