So declares a woman interviewed by The New Republic's Michelle Cottle.

That statement seems to sum up the post-Sept. 11 attitude toward gun control. Things were already tough for the gun-control movement. Convinced that Al Gore's strong anti-gun stance had cost the Democratic Party the 2000 election, the Democratic Leadership Council

Properly understood, the gun control movement has always rested on certain essentially religious notions (indeed, though it is little publicized, much of the gun-control movement’s financial and institutional support comes from non-evangelical Protestant denominations). These notions are that violence – even against a criminal – is always bad, that ordinary people are not to be trusted, and that it is best to let the authorities look out for you.

In addition, the movement has always contained a rather strong undercurrent of hostility toward traditional American standards of masculinity, of which it sees the gun as a symbol.

It is here that things seem to have changed the most. Americans have learned that being harmless does not guarantee that they will not be harmed: in fact, it seems that terrorists (like ordinary criminals) actually prefer victims who cannot strike back.

What I can't undestand is why it took 9-11 to change the minds of so many people concerning the harm of gun control. As a married female licensed to carry concealed, I have been trying desperately to make other females understand that the ONLY equalizer for a female against an attack from a male is a loaded gun used with proper defense training.

Women have been attacked, beaten and raped for centuries. Since 9-11 though, I have met with far less resistance to the notion that women should be armed than prior to that tragic date.

Go figure.

It is also more and more apparent by the day that it is important for all Americans to demand the full restoration of the 2A. Start with Brady etal, and then go back to the original sin, GCA '68.

Until then, for those who have the unfortunate position of living in the People's Republics here within the US, remember "It's better to be judged by 12 than be carried by 6"

I'd like some more detail about Protestant involvement with the gun control movement. The link you supplied talked about an appeal to stop the bombing. That's different. If you look around, Protestants are not the ones against guns. It is largely the immigrants and the recently-foreign. Jews are against guns, at least for the population at large. Catholics are against guns - the Irish especially - look no further than the Bradys and Rosie O'Donnell. Their fellow-Catholics do nothing to help them reform. And let's be frank. They didn't come here to build a great nation. The great nation was already built. They came to suck the money. The list goes on. Muslims are against guns - guns in the hands of Americans will keep them from achieving their goals. So a little clarificiation would be helpful. And Protestants in the State of Washington on a subject other than gun control falls short of constituting clarification.
