The Afternoon Dispatch and Courier (Maharashtra, India, 3 - Nov - 2001)
The big question that now haunts the state home department, and police in particular, is who dared to play this mischief? Or was it an act of terrorism?
"We checked out the senders' address which had been written on the envelopes. It turned out to be bogus. Obviously, the real sender would not put his original address," Mr. Bhujbal told this newspaper last night. "The police have been asked to trace the sender. But till now, they have met with little success. The investigation is on," Mr. Bhujbal added.
It is learnt that both envelopes bore the Parbhani district of Maharashtra postal stamp and the return address on them was that of a retired employee of the state revenue department. The superintendent of police of Parbhani district checked out the address and found it was fake.
Meanwhile, the director general of health services, Mr. Subhash Salunke, said that of the four samples referred to the Molecular Diagnostics Pvt Ltd. research centre at Thane by the state-run Haffkine Institute, one showed undisputed evidence of anthrax bacilli.
He said the powder would be sent for further examination to the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) laboratory at Gwalior and the results would be available by tomorrow.
Meanwhile, six employees of Mr. Bhujbal's office, who were exposed to the suspicious powder, were reported to be all right this morning.

According to the police, tension prevailed in all districts following incidents of arson and rioting by miscreants. While one person was stabbed inside a Shiva temple, the head of a buffalo was found thrown inside a Hanuman temple at Parbhani.
At Buldhana, mischief mongers desecrated the statue of a goddess with cow dung. These incidents are seen as the handiwork of some individuals who are attempting to create communal disharmony in the entire state.
At Iqbal Nagar in Buldhana, people were heard chanting slogans like `Laden Zindabad', `Pakistan Zindabad' after the Friday namaz. Heavy stone-throwing and arson followed, forcing the police to resort to lathi charges to quell the rioters.
At Jalgaon miscreants burnt a couple of houses and shops as violence erupted in the streets. Heavy police bandobast has been maintained while around 30 people have been taken into custody.
