HALLOWEEN is a time for scary costumes. Many kids walked across the Lawn this year dressed to induce fear, but all with a comic aspect to it. But shopping at a Halloween store last weekend, I encountered a frightening costume that wasn't funny. There was a child-sized Confederate soldier costume hanging right there between the black cat ears and the cowboy hat. People bought them, too. Only three Robert E. Lee costumes remained at The Party Starts Here in Seminole Square by Halloween night. A Confederate soldier is a completely inappropriate costume for a child to wear for Halloween because, to many Americans, it represents racism and general Anti-Americanism.

Dear Ms. Liu,
I thought I would drop a note to you before you begin to write any other words of wisdom. After reading your article in the Cavalier Daily today, I honestly feel less intelligent for reading it. You might want to look at a couple of things before you delve into another foray about the Confederacy
1) The 'black laws' in Illinois, the home of the northern Tyrant, instituted in 1853, which prevented blacks from even living in the state. If abe was so concerned about slavery, why is there no documentation about his arguments against these heinous laws. There were several 'black laws' in the north, but suprisingly none in the South
2)The constitution of the state of Oregon, admitted in 1859, and stayed in the Union, which expressly forbid free blacks from entering the state. In the original document, there were some other races they apparently did not like. The use of the word 'Chinamen' and their rights within the state were discussed.
3) From your own university, the FIRST African-American professor at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, James H. Brewer, while an associate professor wrote The Confederate Negro, expounding upon the many works that blacks willingly did in the South to continue the Confederacy.
4)The all holy Emancipation Proclamation. Read the wording very, very carefully. It was originally released on Sept 22,1862 and ONLY went into effect on Jan 1,1863 if the Southern states did not return to the Union. If they returned to the Union, slaves were not automatically freed. And why is it that during the war, slavery was not forbidden in the north. Within Southern lands occupied by northern forces, slavery was still practiced. You might also want to ask yourself, if lincoln respected everyone equally, why did he want to force 'slaves and as many free blacks as were willing to go' (his own words BTW) to colonize themselves somewhere outside of the United States.
The War of Northern Aggression was an economic war and if you are not willing to realize that, then I suggest you pick another career besides journalism. We have far too many journalists now willing to tow the government lie that has been propagated for the past 136 years

to kimberly liu: its halloween you MORON; get a real life; n go "micro-manage it. Audio
I know that the typical Northern soldier didn't give two d&mns either! I wish these people who write this drivel would take the time to read the letters and journals of the men who fought for both sides during the war. They'd be hard-pressed to find the topic of slavery discussed. Preservation of the Union was the main aim of the boys in blue, and independence from a tyrranical government was the goal of the boys in gray. If anybody had told them they were going to battle over slaves, there never would have been a war!
LOL! No tickee, no laundry!
So let's not be callin' no kettles "black," suh.

Please just admit for once, the War was not about slavery and quit worshipping the memory of your little god.
Read the documented evidence of Lincoln's three month power trip before public opinion forced him to call Congress back into session. You know the ship building, the $2,000,000 'loan' from the US Treasury, the 75,000 volunteers, all using an outdated Act that Washington himself would not have used in that case.
That's not an issue for you?
Just as I am offended by the thought of slavery, and others are offended by the symbols of the Confederacy, I am offended by the "Black Caucus" in Congress. Their wearing formal attire to a "Black" awards, speech or other affair is no less offense to me than flying the Confederate Flag, wearing a Confederate uniform etc. Racism is Racism; equality is not just one sided either.
That's basically my take on it as well. I wouldn't let my kid wear a Rosie O'Donnel costume, either, but if other parents let their kids dress up as ol' fathead thht would be their prerogative.
Hi Kim,
My relatives have always served in this nation's Armed Forces, even before it became a Nation. They did wear the uniforms of the United States America and the Confederate States America. They fought and died for their country which makes them Patriots.
You.......are not worthy enough to scrape the mud off their boots or to shovel up the droppings of the Warhorses they rode into battle.
Furthermore, I wish that you would have a nice day, but unfortunately, with your attitude you only have a Sh*tty life to look forward to. Please wallow in it with my blessings.
ms liu should have "interviewed" malik shabazz for her story...
no telling what amazing "insights" she'd acquire...
