Rebelling against Confederate costumes

HALLOWEEN is a time for scary costumes. Many kids walked across the Lawn this year dressed to induce fear, but all with a comic aspect to it. But shopping at a Halloween store last weekend, I encountered a frightening costume that wasn't funny. There was a child-sized Confederate soldier costume hanging right there between the black cat ears and the cowboy hat. People bought them, too. Only three Robert E. Lee costumes remained at The Party Starts Here in Seminole Square by Halloween night. A Confederate soldier is a completely inappropriate costume for a child to wear for Halloween because, to many Americans, it represents racism and general Anti-Americanism.

Gee, sorry I look like R. E. Lee, suh...

They'd sold out of whimpering liberal puke costumes.

The writer brought up some points which are undeniably true if you read the writings of leading Southern political personalities, but in the end this is something people's great grandfather's fought for and I don't believe that your typical Southern soldier gave two d&mns about slavery (nor did Lee condone it). I wouldn't let my kid wear one of those uniforms, but I sure as hell wouldn't bother anyone else about doing it.

`` Most would agree that dressing up like the terrorist would be insensitive and inappropriate, but in some respects, dressing up like bin Laden is less offensive than a Confederate soldier.''

Yeah, right! I don't think so!!!!!!

I spent last week at Emory University looking through over 300 folders of letters and diaries by Confederate and Union soldiers. No more than ten of those folders contained references to slavery and even those (predominantly Union accounts) were critical of blacks. While I agree that slavery was the root political cause of the war, it was not the cause that was foremost in the hearts and minds of the men doing the actual fighting. The common soldiers were more concerned with preserving the Union, defending home and hearth, and doing their duty.

A confederate soldier uniform represents a similar negative ideology - that blacks should be subservient to whites. These Halloween costumes thus are not only offensive to black people but to all humans.

BWHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

Idiot!! Don't even bother reading the history. Just quote what your little history handbook, be a good sheeple, and defend the EMPIRE. That's what you get from government education!!

The Confederate uniform represents the Constitution, the last bastion of freedom before the northern Tyrant overran the last vestige of the Federal Republic and instituted his form of socialist national democracy

What's even worse is that Ms. Liu is writing for the Univeristy of Virginia newspaper. She can't even bother to look back 30 years into her own history when an African-American associate professor at that very university(who later became the FIRST African-American professor at UNC) wrote a book called The Confederate Negro describing not only the willing help supplied by African-Americans to the Confederacy, but how many of them wanted to Confederacy to survive. Dr. James H. Brewer. Look into it, before you start ranting about costumes. Leftie!!

Not satisfied with attacking the Confederate flag and removing founding father's names from schools, liberals are now attacking the very soul of southern culture by comparing Robert E. Lee with Hitler and Osama Bin Laden. What a load of revisionist history. What a load of crap.

The war on Southern Heritage continues.

Wonder what this guy would say about a Jesse Jackson costume. Or Al Sharpton. Now that's scary!

"They may not understand that the Confederate flag flies at Klu Klux Klan rallies"

Actually, the by-laws of the KKK state that the flag of the United States must be flown, no where does it mention the Confederate flag. If you look into it further, Nathan Bedford Forrest actually disbanded the Klan in 1869 because of the increasing violence.

Few would hesitate to be appalled if a child went trick-or-treating dressed as Hitler

Now Johnny reb is Hitler. The reasoning in this screed is so muddleheaded, I don't know where to begin. Fortunately, the author usually clues us in on the next expression of mental flatulence with a premonitory "thus", "therefore", or orphan sentence. I hope there was no charge for the education which allowed the author to make such a blazing display of her intellectual dysfunction.

I thought Halloween costumes were supposed to be scary, anyway. Has the night been PC'ed into a masquarade ball? Anyway, thought you might find this of interest.

"Many Confederates, including prominent politicians, believed that the Confederacy was founded on the principle of white supremacy over a necessarily subservient black race."

I'd be interested in finding out which prominent politicians she's talking about. Guess she isn't aware that many northerners, including that prominent politician Abraham Lincoln believed that the black race was subservient to the white. What is it with these people? I hope she didn't pay too much for that college education because it looks like she got gypped big time!
