The Yankees of 2001 will be the first legend in the new millennium. In two innings of baseball, this team has given life to the fantasies of virtually every little leaguer and mesmerized everyone who has ever competed in any sort of game, sport, or gamble: bottom of the ninth with two outs and a home run for one more chance to win, not once but twice.
Teachers, coaches, and drill instructors will motivate their charges with Yogi Berra's "It's not over till it's over" and use this team to prove the point. One time would be pretty lucky but twice? It must be a principle of the universe: never give up, no matter what.
Well, if you are attempting something impossible and experience leads you to the conclusion that it is impossible, giving up is certainly appropriate. But it is never appropriate in professional sports, nor is it appropriate in life in situations where giving up involves giving in to evil.
Not too many Little Leaguers still awake at 12:45 PM!!
