FReepers and lurkers were in attendance at the Centre for New Black Leadership's Excellence in Leadership Awards and 4th Annual Scholars Event held at the J.W. Marriott hotel in Washington, D.C. on the night of October 17.
Vice President Dick Cheney made his first public social appearance since September 11 to speak at the event and present the Inaugural Thomas Sowell Award to Justice Clarence Thomas. Mr. Cheney was escorted and introduced by Rep. J.C. Watts. The event was emceed by Phyllis Berry Myers, Executive Director of CNBL. Amb. Alan Keyes, member, CNBL Advisory Board, gave the salutory address.
Also honored that evening were Jennifer Carroll, Executive Director, Florida Department of Veteran's Affairs; Ruben Van Mitchell, Subcommittee on Space and Aeronautics, U.S. House of Representatives; and W. Gregory Wims, Hammer and Nails, Inc.
FReepers present (whom I recall) were Clinton's a liar (event co-organizer), L. Jean Lewis, Howard Law, trueblackman (Project 21), tgslTakoma and Kristinn.
My apologies, I didn't take notes, only pictures, so this isn't the usual detailed report.
Notables in attendance (whom I recall)were Solicitor General Ted Olson, HUD Undersecretary Alphonso Jackson, Bob Woodson, C. Boyden Gray, Virginia Thomas, Sean Hannity, Rita Cosby, Juan Williams, Bill Sammon, Paul Sperry, Peter Roff.
In many ways, this was a reunion of old friends who supported Justice Thomas during the tribulation of his Senate confirmation hearings 10 years ago that month. Justice Thomas made special note of one person whom he didn't know at the time, but became great friends with because of her efforts on his behalf: Barbara K. Olson. He also thanked those present who stood by him during those dark days.
Mr. Jackson read a stirring tribute to Justice Thomas written by Thomas Sowell, who was unable to be there.
Justice Thomas was given a hero's reception by his friends.
Vice President Cheney kidded about getting out from his undisclosed location , and gave serious remarks about the terrorist attacks and the war that we had recently embarked on.

This is great. Justice Thomas has had his share of trouble, but with folks like you around to back him, he's got some really great support.

Outstanding report and pictures. With luck, Justice Thomas will become Chief Justice when CJ Renquist steps down. What a great gathering. Do any of you "inside the beltway" folks have an opinion on Juan Williams? Is he becoming a conservative? Osmosis from fox news?

Vice President Cheney gives his remarks

I wish I could have been there. I have seen Justice Thomas speak several times on CSPAN and it is always very moving. I pray for his good health and that he is on the Supreme Court for a VERY LONG time.
It was never reported in the "popular" media, nor will it ever be, but a huge part of the reason the liberals went after him with such gusto during his confirmation (hard to believe 10 years ago now...) was that he was young and they knew he would be a sane voice on the Court for a long time to come. God bless Justice Thomas. Wish we had a few more like-minded SC justices.

Isn't L. Jean the best? Here's a great one of she and Sean:

Here's a great one where Justice Thomas, VP Cheney and J.C. Watts shared a light moment. I believe this is when Justice Thomas asked the VP what he was doing there and told him to get back to work! LOL

It's nice to see them smile. What a great time you folks must have had.
I'm really enjoying these pictures. This is great!

Juan Williams is a very nice man, even though we disagree vehemently on politics.
Wonder what Justice Thomas is telling Juan Williams here? LOL

Dr. Keyes has a beautiful wife. I've never seen her. Look at her hair! Really nice.

Nope. The event was closed to the press. This was the Vice President's first public appearance after Sept. 11, so they were reluctant to deal with a bunch of media at the event. If they let working press in at all(C-SPAN), they'd have had to let them all in. The members of the press who were there were friends and attended as our guests! CNBL will at some point have a video available, I believe!
