Many mainstream news media have failed to report that some of the more prominent heroes of the Sept. 11 attacks were gay. The omissions lead readers to believe that these people were heterosexual.

How relevant is it for journalists to mention someone's sexual orientation in not only this story, but all stories? How does it affect the context of the story by reporting someone's sexual orientation?

"liberal" estimate is actually a pretty good characterization, FB! Most estimates run closer to 2-3%. Even accounting for heavy recruitment and attempts to normalize the behaviors over the last decade, I can't imagine it to be higher than 4%.

When I heard about them, I didn't even consider who they liked to have sex with...either hetero or homo. They were just heroes.

I believe that it's against Federal Law to ask this question- at least on the Census Forms. Try to count 'em and the hue and cry of discrimination would be deafening! ONe of the three guys who is known to have been involved in attacking the hijackers (Bingham, the rugby player) was gay. He was part of an all-gay rugby team.

You need to get your facts straight. There is NO evidence that this man was one of the passengers who fought the hijackers.

There were others who told people on the phone that 'we are going to do something.' But this man did not tell his mother that. There was only hopeful speculation that this man, who was an agressive, large athlete who once fought off a mugger, actually participated in the attack.

If he did, he is a hero. But using your logic, everybody on board should be given a military burial. And everybody's sex partner[s?] should be given a flag.
