Talk show host Tom Sullivan just reported that during a press conference Gov. Davis said he was notified that there is evidence that terrorists plan to target the Coronado Bridge (San Diego), the Golden Gate & Bay Bridges (San Francisco) and an LA Bridge (didn't catch the name) tomorrow, Friday, Nov. 2nd.

The better look out for trucks....because I think that is the only way they can take out the bridges...trucks full of diesel fuel and fertilizer slammed. Perish the thought

Now, Now, I have seen the LA River when it is as you say 2 ft wide and 2 inches deep. I have also seen it during a rainstorm when it was to the top of the concrete trench and washing junked cars out to sea! I visited my son at college about two years ago and there were mudslides up and down the Pacific Coast Highway from all the rain. When I saw the LA River then , I was amazed in that it was actually a real raging river. Most of the other times I have seen it, it has not even been, what I could call a creek.

Well the Coronado Bridge if blown could cause some traffic problems, but won't be fatal as Coronado is a peninsula not an island and you can get there by driving around the Silver Strand. The bridge was built in 1969 and has five lanes. There is a large Naval Air Station there-NAS North Island and the Naval Amphibious Base on the strand near Coronado proper. (home of US NAVY Seals)and considerable number of people work at North Island, both military a civilians, so it could be a target. There is also a significant US Navy presence at the Naval Station in National City/San Diego. Several ships are berthed south of the bridge and should it fall it might cause problems getting a few ships out of the harbor until UDT could blow it out of the way (say a couple of hours practice)

FYI I have noticed a few more military jets flying in San Diego last couple of weeks than before and in areas they didn't fly before.

You've got to be kidding! IMHO that's the direct opposite of what we should be doing. If we truly had credible evidence of someone wanting to have that sort of attack you could EASILY prepare for it and not only prevent the attack but capture the terrorists at the same time. To let them know we know, only ensures that they switch targets and dates and does not help us capture anyone.

Thanks for posting this, I was looking for it for a few days. I think this letter is extremely significant. Bringing down some big bridges that span harbors and ports could also disrupt shipping - there would be big pieces of bridge in the way for weeks. I could see the Baltimore and Boston tunnels being targets for the same reason.

Also, we should be ready for direct attacks on, or from, cargo ships -- remember the story earlier this week about the Turkish man that was found on a ship in Europe hiding in a container. Perhaps that was a trial run for an attack involving terrorists shipping themselves into U.S. ports on cargo ships and either setting off bombs or shooting missiles from the ships. This would have the same effect on our shipping that 9/11 had on the airlines - everyone would be afraid to get on a ship or ship their goods for weeks.

Just heard on KABC in LA, out of Grayout Davis own mouth, there was a credible threat on these 4 bridges.

There is a very large Bridge in Long Beach, ( LA ) which spans the Los Angeles Harbor. Which, in itself, has been a major concern for an attack. If the bridge comes down, it will disrupt a tremendous amount of commerce on the west coast. This would further bin ladens real goal of disrupting our economy!!!

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that the Golden Gate and East Bay bridges are the prime terrorist targets in CA. They are high profile nationally recognizable structures. About the only other structure with national recognition in northern CA is the Transamerica pyramid building in SF. So Gray Davis' info isn't particularly new and shouldn't have much significance. If law enforcement wasn't already keeping an eye on these two bridges, I would be very surprised.

It might be newsworthy, but the Coronado Bay Bridge in San Diego would be a harder target to take down than the three other bridges in California.

Reason being?

The Coronado Bay Bridge in San Diego is modular. You know how they have a naval base in that area? Well in order to get those large carriers out, they have to shut down traffic and dismantle the bridge. It essentially floats, so they can just disconnect a piece or two, tow them out of the way, and let the ship out. Float them back in, reconnect, and let traffic across once more.

Take out a section of the bridge, and traffic will probably be closed anyways. It's a toll bridge to begin with, so the traffic there won't be what everyone expects from rush hour on a bridge. If a bridge column is taken out, it might be a year or so before said column is rebuilt and replaced. In the mean time, it makes letting naval ships out easier because said bridge is already out of the way.
