On the top. Imagine trying to be rescued by "chopper

Actually the doors to the top of the building were locked by the port authority. Nobody had a chance to get rescued.

Not according to the 911 telephone transcripts. Someone called and said they were one of 40 people who had made it to the roof and asked 911 for instructions on how to save their lives. The people in Tower One said that the excape doors into the stairwell leading up to the roof or down to the groudn were blocked with debris that had fallen during impact. But there WERE 40 people on the roof as of 20 minutes BEFORE the collapse.

There had been a suggestion in a newspaper that helicopters might have rescued some people from the roof of the WTC, but that suggestion is too facile and forgets that a roof rescue would have been confronted with literally hundreds of panicy people, who could fill dozens of copters. I doubt enough copters could have been mobilized, particularly since a safe landing zone for all of them might not be available in that sort of crisis. Moreover, copter piloting with the updrafts of the fire would have been extremely risky and would have include the very real risk of a copter crashing into the same or a nearby building and thereby adding to the devastation.
