How 115 Eyes Saw Hell (brutal, heart-wrenching HBO 911 documentary)

I saw video of a few of the jumpers on the web. It was horrible. I really regretted looking at the video.

I just saw in the NY Post last Friday, that the finally found the remains of a former coworker of mine.

We haven't retaliated enough yet. Not even close.

It needs to be chilling and upset people. I fear that too many people (not FReepers) have forgotten the hideous pain we all felt and the raw devastation from the first days in the aftermath. They need to be bitchslapped back into reality.

I agree, big time. Hope you are doing OK.

The photos are excellent. There will never again be photos like those. Keep them safe.

I just wish the title were different, it took away from them and brought back to mind the bodies falling out of the building. But I did enjoy the photos.

It has since been renamed from the Asch Building to the Brown Building, and it is now part of New York University.

And would still be a deathtrap if it were to catch on fire again, IMHO, unless the sprinklers are a lot stronger than I suspect. (I spent a lot of time in that building in college. Lots of tiny, twisty, turny halls. They do have giant fire doors that can be rolled into position by anyone at any time, though.)

I figured there would be some sort of memorial there.

There is a small plaque on the side of the building. I believe it's on the Washington Place side, but I don't recall for certain.

They jumped because it was the only hope left, behind them was certain death scorching their backs, their hair, in front of them lay the possibility of a miracle and a few more seconds of life.

We do tend to forget, and we do need to be reminded. We especially need to be reminded that nothing, zero, nadda, zip, of any real consequence has been done to prevent another event to need to be reminded of.

It is still hard to look at these pictures, eight months later.

The saddest thing is the news media has self-censored most of the truly awful pictures and video. They think we're children and refuse to let us see any of it, even though there are untold thousands of such photos and probably at least hundreds of such videos.

NYC GOP Chick says we need to be able to rekindle the pain, to remind the public what we're fighting for as they start to tune out again. I agree totally, but in my mind, we were never allowed to truly feel the pain in the first place. And we never will be. Because the media has made the decision for us that we can't handle the truth.

Representatives of the International Ladies Garment Workers Union and the New York Fire Department mark the 63rd anniversary of the Triangle fire commemorated in 1974.  Pauline Newman, (below the plaque) was an employee of the Triangle Shirtwaist Company.

"God does not help those who do not help themselves."

Really? Can you cite a scripture passage backing up your assertion?

Christianity is based on the notion of man fallen from grace, out of favor with God, unable to help himself, unable to save himself...and God's free gift to man is in the person of Jesus Christ, who died for the sins of the world.

The Psalms are full of entreaties by a helpless David to God for deliverance from his enemies. God helped him when he was unable to help himself.

My reading of scripture tells me that God is the helper of the helpless. I ask you, would there be any point in helping someone who doesn't need help? If you're already helping yourself, why do you need God?

I'm in agreement with most of the posters on this thread: There's no way for you to know how you'd react under the circumstances at the World Trade Center on 9/11. (Those people didn't "give up." They reacted primally to intense heat, the likes of which you cannot imagine.)

I am not trying to be morbid

But you are. I see no purpose in this post other than morbidity.

I think the furthur we get from 9/11/2001, the more complacent we get without reminders of what happened on that tragic day. Morbidity may be just what we need to keep the horror of that day in our minds so that we persevere in our continuing fight against the monsters who perpetrated the evil of 9/11. I wouldn't mind the footage of the planes flying into the WTC being shown at the beginning of every newscast.

I was fortunate that I was able to get the roof tour before they closed access to the roof by the general public. I remember it was right after a tightrope guy (one of the Wallendas, I believe) tightrope walked from one tower to the other. Think about that.

Well, a bit better than I was then, but it will never be the same.

Well yes. the media did choose to limit what they showed, but the worst of it -- and the sheer horror of it all -- can never be captured on film, video, etc.

The purpose of this thread is to remind people (like you) with short attention spans that America was attacked and suffered loss on Sept. 11, 2001. Lest you forget!
