PARIS, Oct. 31 (UPI) -- A CIA agent allegedly met with suspected terrorist mastermind Osama bin Laden in July, while the Saudi underwent treatment for kidney problems at an American hospital in Dubai, France's Le Figaro newspaper reported Wednesday.

Besides a stream of local dignitaries and family members, bin Laden's visitors included a local CIA agent, the newspaper reported. The agent was widely recognized locally, Le Figaro said, and later told several friends of the meeting.

A Hypothesis FYI:
Anyone from Pittsburgh surely remembers Mayor Richard Caligiuri. Any anti-abortion, pro-life advocate will remember Governor Bob Casey, also of Pennsylvania. When I read the Washington Times article about Bin Laden's admission to the American Hospital in Dubai for liver problems, this was the very first thought that entered my mind.
If the article and THIS speculation is true, then my evaluation of Bin Laden as a US Stalking Horse gains in credence.

AMYLOIDOSIS

Amyloidosis is a group of diseases which have in common the accumulation of abnormal protein in various organs. It is best known in Pennsylvania as the illness that afflicted Governor Robert Casey and Mayor Richard Caligiuri. The symptoms experienced by patients depend on the type of protein in a particular case and the organs involved.

Rheumatologists first became interested in amyloidosis because it can occur as a result of any chronic inflammatory process, such as rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, or chronic infections. Only a minority (<1%) of rheumatic disease patients develop this complication, and usually only those whose inflammation is not well controlled. Amyloidosis most often affects the kidneys, resulting in increased amounts of protein in the urine and kidney failure. It may also involve the adrenal glands or intestines. The diagnosis can be made by biopsying the involved organ. A simple way to make the diagnosis is to remove a small amount of fat from under the skin. This type of amyloidosis, called secondary amyloidosis (also called AA amyloid), is treated by suppressing the inflammatory process as aggressively as possible. A trial is under way to test a drug which may dissolve this type of amyloid, hopefully leading to improved organ function.

The most common form of amyloid is AL, or light chain-associated amyloid. This condition results from an abnormal protein produced by cells in the bone marrow called plasma cells. It is a severe form of amyloidosis which can involve almost any organ, but especially the heart, kidney, lung, nerve, and intestine. To destroy the cells that produce the abnormal protein, patients are treated with chemotherapy or bone marrow transplantation.

Familial amyloidosis is the result of accumulation of a protein resulting from the process of mutation. The symptoms of a particular form of familial amyloidosis depends on the ethnic origin of the family involved and even on the individual family involved. One of the common forms (although it is very rare) is found among families of Mediterranean descent. Because the abnormal protein is produced in the liver, this form can be treated with liver transplantation.

"He was never a patient here for any days," Chief Executive Office Bernard Koval told AFP. "Osama bin Laden has never been here. He's never been a patient and he's never been treated here. This is too small a hospital for someone to be snuck through the backdoor," he said.

This one AFP article, on which all the others are based, is certainly not evidence. It wouldn't surprise me if the CIA was dealing with Bin Ladin during the clinton years at the same time that they were pretending to demonize him. Way back when we were supporting the Afghans against the Russians, the CIA presumably DID deal with him. I suppose it's remotely possible that the clintonoids who are still in the CIA might follow up on what they had been doing at clinton's instigation. But this little news piece is not enough to take seriously.

All the people on this thread who are throwing cold water on this story say it is unbelievable that the identity of the CIA station chief in Dubai would be widely known. I don't know enough about intelligence operations to be able to judge whether that part of the story is believable or not -- remember, the sources for the story are French, and it seems to me quite believable that the SDECE station chief in Dubai would know who the CIA station chief is.

But, even if that part of the story is not true, that does nothing to call into doubt the other part of the story, that bin Laden was treated at the American Hospital in Dubai in July. We happen to know that bin Laden's mother was treated at the American Hospital in Paris in September.

We have FBI agents who have gone bad, and spied for other countries. It isn't impossible that a CIA agent who had worked with bin Laden to defeat the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan may have stayed close to the terrorist organization even after the Soviet Union fell. That we have spies for bin Laden working within the US spook agencies is something to consider.
