How many jumped from the WTC towers?
Posted on 10/31/2001 3:16:12 PM PST by ErnBatavia
The media has seemed to suppress this (how many poor souls that felt compelled to jump from the burning towers) for whatever reason.
I, for one, would like to be armed with some sort of number who leaped to their certain deaths. I have a feeling, due to the "Vietnamization" taking place now, that this tidbit of data might come in handy.......right about the time some clown gets my '5 across the lips'.
Anybody have an idea as to the numbers involved here? Thanks in advance.

Correction: The roof door on one tower was locked. But apparently the other door was breached and over 20 people were on that roof. They had made a number of 911 calls and police helos were trying to figure out how to rescue them when the building collapsed. The 911 reports are very telling. One tower had reports of over 700 people trapped above the wreckage.

Yes, the chaplain was the first rescuer casualty that day. He was performing last rites for a WTC victim when a jumper landed on him. If I remember correctly, his death certificate is number 1 for this horrible event.

If it's any comfort (and it probably isn't) no less an authority than the Pope ruled that jumping from a burning tower was not suicide. I don't have the details but this dates back to the middle ages.

September 12, 2001 New York Daily News, page 10:
"High in the sky, the most horrifying drama of all began to unfold. Trapped by searing smoke and flames, desperate people started to plunge off the top floors of the towers, some flailing as they went. 'They were jumping out of the windows,' said janitor Nancy Joyner. 'They were just jumping and jumping and jumping'. Construction worker Edwin Moore watched in horror as a man tried to shimmy down the outside of the tower. He made it about three floors before flipping backward to the ground."
I remember hearing someone on the news that day saying that they saw a couple of dozen people jump, so I think the real number is probably many more than 20. I have the feeling that we will never know.

It doesn't matter. 6,000 Americans paid the ultimate price of freedom on 9/11. The libs in this country are losing ground fast with their "send them hugs not bombs" campaign. W will be a two term Pres.

I understand concern for the families and the avoidance of over-sensalization.
But I really think the horrific gruesome photos should NOT be covered up by the media.
Everyone needs to know what a terrible thing this truly was.
Everyone needs to see the horror and that this was NOT a Hollywood movie.
You can bet the media will not hesitate to show the world the horror of what our bombing has done
as soon as they can get their cameras in there.
War ain't pretty. People die. Sometimes in horrific unspeakable ways.
Media coverage of Desert Storm gave the sheeple the impression that war was sanitary.
Hollywood makes the sheeple think the gore of "Saving Private Ryan" was just a movie.
Taliban and Al Queda forces are being blown to bits and the media are chomping at the bit to have it on the 6:00 news.

The beloved police/fire chaplain that was killed in the towers was hit by a jumper.Yes, I've heard that from a couple of sources. It's just not PC, so the media wants us to think that he was struck by falling debris.

The one picture that still haunts me, that I cannot get out of my head, is the woman holding her baby out the busted window, probably to relieve the child from the intense heat in the building. They are with God now, not Allah, not some imaginary god implanted into the gullible mind of an Arab named Mohammed, with God. Bless them ... and kill the Taliban and the terrorists. No Mercy, send them to Hell, to their allah in hades.

It had to be way more than a dozen. I've talked to people who worked across the street from the WTC and they said there were bodies of jumpers all over - one was even impaled on a lightpole. Not to mention one hitting the priest. I can't even imagine what had to be going through the minds of the people on the roof of the last WTC building after watching the first collapse. I believe the media should show all photos to keep the outrage alive.

My friend was there. She worked in the Verizon bldg., which is right there. She said when the 1st plane hit, she was almost knocked out of her chair. She left the Verizon bldg. and was watching events unfold. She counted 25 jumpers from the one side that she could see.

yes, that is true about Father Michal Judge. He was giving the last rites to someone, when a jumper fell on him.

The fireman who was on Larry King Weekend (this last weekend ... transcript still here) said one every couple of minutes. I'm sure it was dozens. Later I read that if people are in a window and a fire approaches them they almost ALWAYS will opt to jump.

...The horrific attack is quite horrible enough without obsessing on the gruesome and truly gut-wrenching way in which some of ours died.
Maybe the author was not being "gruesome." Maybe he wanted to know so that he could send a message to the media for them to think about Americans dying versus their constant reporting of the "innocent civilians" being bombed in Afghanistan.
Remember, 5-6,000 Americans DIED on American soil.
Stop whining, wake up, and THINK.

Thanks. I've seen that photo. It's sad that we don't seem to expect truth about anything, anymore.

I can't even imagine what had to be going through the minds of the people on the roof of the last WTC building after watching the first collapse. In fact there was a cell phone call from about 40 people trapped on the roof. This about 20 minutes before it collapsed.

Please explain how the number of people who jumped can be known? Who was counting, and were they positioned all around the building? Who coordinated the counters to come up with a total? If you were there, would you be counting as people jumped, or would you turn away in horror?
To: error99
I can't remember the photographers name or what talk show he was on, but he took very GRAPHIC non stop pictures of the WTC disaster.
He said he had many photos of people jumping out of the buildings, BUT he felt it was not the time yet to reveal this part of history, as it would be painful to the families to see these graphic final moments of their loved ones lives.
Someday, he will release them.
