Huge explosion hits front lines north of Kabul

JABAL SARAJ, Afghanistan (AP) A huge explosion hit the Bagram front lines about 25 miles north of Kabul on Tuesday, sending up a mushroom cloud that billowed at least 1,000 feet into the air.

The origin of the explosion was not immediately clear, since there were no airplanes immediately overhead. However, U.S. planes had roared in the skies over the front lines north of the capital throughout the morning and early afternoon Tuesday.

It was also not clear what positions had been hit by the blast and how extensive the damage was.

This makes more sense that it was a series of bombs aligned in the same direction as the front lines. This would be much more devastating than a single large bomb because the shape of the explosion would conform to the location of the troops.

A single huge bomb would not cover as long of an area as a series and also because of the larger bombs more circular pattern would be mostly wasted.

A single bomb in the center of a base or city would make more sense, but not here on a long drawn out line.

Large FAE and daisycutters exceed the yield of the smallest nukes in our inventory.

The use of fuel-air bombs now may reveal what the earlier strategy was that led a British newspaper to call the war a fraud.

The air force had to destroyed empty bunkers first in pinpoint strikes that the Taliban did not fear because they could see them coming.

But, now, with no place to hide but trench lines, the fuel-air bombs are killing them all.

To you? What did I say to you that you didn't understand? I believe the protocol is to quote it in italics and then ask for clarification.

This story was posted on September 23. The emails of Richard Duckus (qqduckus@unm.edu) and his department (history@unm.edu) were FReeped at that time.

That will make a big hole in enemy lines.

Yob tvoyu mat*, Taliban, if you didn't want this war, you should have handed Osama over to us. You had 17 days after Bush gave his speech to Congress. We are not f***ing around any more.

* = Translation unprintable.

The story above that you posted was originally posted over a month ago as I noted, on September 23, despite the author recycling it as though it were news.

The story you posted on this thread is current, a great comeback.

What don't you understand?

I'm no expert but I believe even the smallest nukes have distinctive characteristics which differentiate them from larger conventional devices. One aspect is the intense light produced which, if I'm not mistaken, exceeds that of conventional explosives considerably.

Then again, I was just a dumb grunt so I could be wrong.

FAE = fuel air explosive designed to kill/destroy by overpressure.

I've heard references to "bunker-busters" and didn't know what they actually were. Would that be an FAE?

I thought that the "Daisy Cutter" was mistaken for a nuke, too. That one apparently was called in as a nuke from a SAS troop on patrol.

Use the weapon, use whatever weapons we have. IF they strike America again, let them know that Bin Laden and staff will 'glow' for sure and that country will be made into a flat country. ALL weapons we have will be used.
