[history]
Those at the CIA, members of congressional oversight committees and others say they find themselves in conversations about kidnapping family members of suspected terrorists, hiring Afghan drug lords and bandits as informants, and possible assassination attempts. There was no sign that such extreme plans had been launched, officials said, but it seems that little is off the table.

They're waking up, at last. I hate to be medieval about this, but I still go back to the first and last kidnapping of Russian diplomats in Beirut. The kidnappers were found by the side of the road with their privates stuffed in their mouths; the Russians never had another kidnapping in Lebanon.

By now, they should have either talked, or have been
toeless and fingerless, and know the taste of their testicles.
WHAT are we waiting for? Nukes? They bombed us 911. They attacked us with biowarfare.
Why the delay? Why were the terrorists' cars not cultured 6 weeks ago?
Why are these people not in the hands of Mossad already?
To: veronica
Nah, just do this (as heard on Michael Savage a few days ago). Bring two Jewish gentlemen into the room, introduce them as members of the Mossad, and state that the two have come to take the suspect back to Israel for in-depth questioning.
The suspect will immediately cough up everything he knows.

Pull those fingernails, but lets continue our "immigration free for all".
To: laconic
No, No, No, they sent back body parts in a small box, over several mailings, to family members of the kidnappers. THEN the Russians stopped getting kidnapped.

Why pull nails? When you can medicate, medicate, medicate. No muss, no fuss.

Roosevelt used gangsters like Lucky Luciano to help win WW II.
The enemy of our enemies is our friend.
To: laconic
I remember roughly the same thing. The hostage-takers got the message damn quickly too.
I have always been exasperated with this minimum force idea of waging war. The object of a war is, or should be, to destroy the enemy.
When fighting a disease, a reseacher does not try to come up with a drug that only kills one variant of a disease vector. He does not try to kill 90 percent of the viruses. If he does that, all he has done is help create a more resistant strain of the disease.
If we are going to eradicate terrorism we are going to have to be as least as ruthless as the terrorists. If we are not prepared to do that, we should not be fighting the war to begin with.

"A lot of people are saying we need someone at the agency who can pull fingernails out." Exactly. And worse...far worse...if need be.

The story I heard was that two of the kidnappers' wives were found dead with their t*ts cut off and stuffed down their throats. The kidnappers then promptly released the Russians.

The problem is that Russia is a shell of it's former self. And let's not forget. Those same GRU spetznats troops that pulled the operation in Lebanon did not fare well in Afghanistan.
Grudgingly we have to admit that the record holders for having the ability to make people speak was the Nazi Gestapo. One of their favorite ploys was to strap a subject face down on a table and using a high power hose to give the subject a painfull enema. It is a bit uncivilized but it got results. A lot of these guys ended up working for the Volks Polizei of the DDR and by default the KGB. I guess they didn't want all that talent to go to waste.

"kidnapping family members of suspected terrorists"
This is perhaps the only method that will work. I hate to say it, especially considering that the family members may be innocent (strong emphasis on "may"), however, these terrorists very often end up dead after their own attack, so it is hard to punish them directly. However, if the family of the terrorists gets killed in retaliation, other terrorists will think twice before attacking (especially considering they have very large families).

Yes medicate but also electrify. Electric voltages applies while someone is pretty doped up might be effective and wouldn't leave marks.
