********************How do you like WINDOWS XP?********************
From me ^ | 27 Oct 01 | Democrats are liars

Well, I just finished installing Windows XP on my computer. It did not go nice and smooth. I ended up reformatting my hard drive and starting from scratch. I know Windows XP sure does not like AOL 6.0. I am in the process of downloading AOL 7.0. I am still installing all my old software. Yes Windows XP locked up on me many times today and last night. Well, I guess I just would like to know how every one else is doing with Windows XP.

"Always wait a year before installing a new (and major) upgrade operating system. It will take at least that long to get the bugs out and for other software manufacturers to put their patches in place." ----------- You are right but I don't want to wait for a year. I might die tomorrow.

It seams that if people truly understand activation AND still complain about it, it reveals that they tend to think they should get to buy the OS once and install it on as many machines as they want.

Perhaps that is one of the reasons I like Linux

If I died tomorrow without having to go through all that reformating and sorting out programs that were not compatible I'd figure I was a head of the game. Get the bugs worked out and let me know when it is ready. All the Best!

I've been running Windows XP for over a month. It has never crashed, and I havn't rebooted my PC for over 3 weeks. It is more stable than any previous version of Windows (I realize that's not saying much)

Its more complicated than that....

The Windows 95 and 98 family finished with Windows ME, which is probably the worst OS ever released by anyone.

The WinNT family is currently Windows 2000, which is basically Windows NT 5.0.

Now, XP has blurred things a bit. They scrapped the 9X base, moved over to the NT kernel, and there are now 2 editions of XP. XP home is nominally the successor to Windows ME, since it's intended for home use. XP Pro is going to be the nominal successor to Win2k, intended for business use.

I'm considering upgrading to XP pro eventually. I paid for it in my mandantory student fees, if its any good, i might as well. Right now, I'm running Win2k on a Dell 733MHz with 384 MB of RAM.

I have been saying, since the old days of Windows 3.1 ( and DOS before that ), when there is a problem with Windows, the problem usually lies between the keyboard and chair. I have never been proven wrong. If you did not shutdown all running programs before starting the install THAT would account for the difficulty in installing. Shutting down all running programs means ending task on all running programs in the background except Explorer, NOT just the applications and programs you happen to have open at the time. Also, it would be prudent to check to see if existing programs you have installed are compatible with WindowsXP. Everyone and his brother knows that AOL has problems with all versions of Windows due to the incompetence of AOL programmers, NOT because Windows is messed up. NO, I DON'T work for Micro$oft. I use all operating systems. I just get tired of people trashing any Operating System.

I seem to be having a difficult time finding drivers for all the devices I have now with xp; can't even imagine how difficult it would be with Linux.

Every time I load software it locks up. I reboot, then it seems OK. I do not know what to think yet. Maybe when I get everything loaded it won't crash anymore. I also am downloading all the updates from the windows update page. Maybe that will help things. Who knows.

blasphemy called Windows Me, what a rotten trick MS played with that one

Release a sub-standard version, then offer XP as an upgrade... they tricked me, but I haven't been having any major unfixable problems with ME.

I did have to reinstall it once, but that was all, and I didn't lose any data.

Not to start an OS war, but more than a few of us have refused to continue on the Microsoft perpetual upgrade train. Try installing Linux (any distribution) as a dual-boot system, then work with both for a while and see which you prefer. I think the chances are at least even that you'll like Linux better.

Stop pushing your religious beliefs on everyone else. You Linus Torvalds worshippers are sooooo annoying.

Windows XP is a GREAT decision for the home computer. Finally Microsoft has thrown off the old DOS/Win95 unstable OS and merged their business OS and home OS into one. The new OS is based on Windows 2000, which was based on Wnidows NT, which is a completely different Operating System than the DOS/Win95 stuff. It is the most stable Microsoft Operating System yet and the included multimedia capabilities are phenomenal.

Of course the Linux obsessed Microsoft bashers are going to bash it out of ignorance or cult-like fervor, but the bottom line is Windows XP is the most feature-filled, most stable, most USEFUL for the common computer user yet.

"Buy a new machine, sounds like its in your hardware. Maybe an old tape drive or something like that." ------------------------------ You mean it won't work on a 286 with a 40 MB hard drive???? Maybe that is my problem!
