Here's a weather center map.  Note the time at the bottom.

For a later version click on this map, then select the area you wish to see.

Warning: Site is very slow today.  I copied three cells to create this map.

I'm in southern IN - right across the OHio River from Louisville, KY. We've been hearing all day and last night about the possibilites of some pretty bad weather.

Even the threat of tornadoes is something that I do not take lightly. I remember vividly the tornado outbreak in this entire region of the country back in 4/74!!

I was a junior in high school - and saw the tornado coming toward the high school - where I was participating in a majorette practice.

We were told to immediately get downstairs to the locker rooms. On the way to the locker rooms - we saw the press box of the football field being lifted and carried through the air - onto the baseball field.

After it went through - I couldn't get home to check if my brothers and parents were ok. My grandfather was police chief at the time - and he was able to get me through - finally. (There were some good points about being the granddaughter of the police chief!--LOL)

Anyway - my family was fine - but 2 rooms in the house were ruined. The house on one side of us was not touched - but the one on the other side was completely destroyed.

So - again - I do NOT take this stuff lightly. I will be spending this evening in our basement!!!

I meant to add in my message above - that at the time we were living in Mason, OH - just north of Cincy. I remember the Xenia destruction very well.

This should become the Great Lakes equivalent of a hurricane, or "freshwater fury" late tonight and Thursday with hurricane-force winds possible on Lake Superior, northern Lake Michigan and northern Huron Thursday and storm force winds all the way to Lake Erie.

Great Lake shipping take warning ...

WRECK OF THE EDMUND FITZGERALD

Gordon Lightoot

The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down
Of the big lake they called 'Gitche Gumee'
The lake, it is said, never gives up her dead
When the skies of November turn gloomy
With a load of iron ore twenty-six thousand tons more
Than the Edmund Fitzgerald weighed empty.
That good ship and true was a bone to be chewed
When the gales of November came early
The ship was the pride of the American side
Coming back from some mill in Wisconsin
As the big freighters go, it was bigger than most
With a crew and good captain well seasoned
Concluding some terms with a couple of steel firms
When they left fully loaded for Cleveland
And later that night when the ship's bell rang
Could it be the north wind they'd been feelin'?

The wind in the wires made a tattle-tale sound
And a wave broke over the railing
And every man knew, as the captain did too,
T'was the witch of November come stealin'.
The dawn came late and the breakfast had to wait
When the Gales of November came slashin'.
When afternoon came it was freezin' rain
In the face of a hurricane west wind.

When suppertime came, the old cook came on deck sayin'.
Fellas, it's too rough to feed ya.
At Seven P.M. a main hatchway caved in, he said
Fellas, it's been good t'know ya
The captain wired in he had water comin' in
And the good ship and crew was in peril.
And later that night when his lights went outta sight
Came the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.

Does any one know where the love of God goes
When the waves turn the minutes to hours?
The searches all say they'd have made Whitefish Bay
If they'd put fifteen more miles behind her.
They might have split up or they might have capsized;
May have broke deep and took water.
And all that remains is the faces and the names
Of the wives and the sons and the daughters.

Lake Huron rolls, Superior sings
In the rooms of her ice-water mansion.
Old Michigan steams like a young man's dreams;
The islands and bays are for sportsmen.
And farther below Lake Ontario
Takes in what Lake Erie can send her,
And the iron boats go as the mariners all know
With the Gales of November remembered.
In a musty old hall in Detroit they prayed,
In the Maritime Sailors' Cathedral.
The church bell chimed till it rang twenty-nine times
For each man on the Edmund Fitzgerald.
The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down
Of the big lake they call 'Gitche Gumee'.
Superior, they said, never gives up her dead
When the gales of November come early!

I remember Xenia too...I was a dispatcher for a police dept. in NWCentral Ohio and we could hear the Police and emergency crews pleading for help from other communities. The Blue Ash district North of Cincinnati was hit by a F-5 two years ago...but at least they had sirens to warn them.

Oh - yes - I remember Blue Ash a couple of years ago, too. We were up there visiting my folks in Mason a few days after the tornadoes hit, and we drove by the area - and it was amazing!!
