Is revenge the only motivation we need for using nukes?

Evidently, you did not read Rep Buyer's remarks. He did not mention revenge as his motivation.

Nuclear weapons are part of our deterrence package. The implicit bargain we have with the world is "Don't use WMD on us, we won't use WMD on you." Rep Buyer says we need to back up that implicit deal, now that the other side has broken the terms of it.

The terrorists have proven that they will incrementally up the violence if they are not stopped. The WTC bombing in 93, the Khobar Towers bombing in 96, the East Africa embassy bombings in 98, the Cole bombing in 2000, were a ratcheting up of the war on the terrorist side. We did not respond in kind. We took ineffective military action in 98. The others were left as law enforcement matters, and we certainly did not get justice.

So now they have introduced WMD - anthrax, biological warfare - in attacks on the US. The fact that anthrax isn't terribly infectious, isn't contagious, and is treatable are not reasons to brush it off as a non-event. To do otherwise is to accept biological warfare as a condition of this war.

It is not a question of whether they will use WMD - they have. And we must make them pay the price so that they nor ANYONE ELSE whould ever think that they can use biological warfare on the US.

So, since the terrorists may have used WMD, we have to. If it were your finger on the trigger, who would you blast?
