Ben-Eliezer: US demand is baseless
Defense Minister Binyamin Ben-Eliezer characterized as "baseless" the US demand that IDF forces withdraw from Palestinian Authority areas.
He said Israel had no intention of remaining in PA-controlled areas.
"All Israel wants is to physically protect its citizens from further infiltrations by terrorists or car bombs," Ben-Eliezer said.
"The government of Israel is the one responsible for insuring the existence and security of the state and its residents.
"We very much appreciate the US, the strategic cooperation ... between us, and we very much respect it, and we certainly stand behind it in it's mission [in Afghanistan] Ben-Eliezer said.
"I think the things which came out of there [the US State Department statement], with all due respect - and we are not belittling it - have no place on the ground because we have no intention of remaining in the territories, conquering the cities, or [their] hilltops."
Israel is prepared to leave the PA areas the moment someone on the other side takes responsibility for negotiations over terms of the withdrawal, Ben-Eliezer said.
"Then there is nothing preventing us discussing the conditions for changing the guard," he said.

It must have escaped you there are nearly five-hundred (500) *more* Palestinians murdered in the past year than the terrorists have taken in Israeli lives. Rationalize that one away--it might be fun to see you try.

By your logic the fact the US will kill a lot more in Afghanistan then the 5,000 who perished in the WTC/Pentagon attacks make those deaths acceptable.

Arafat has a 60,000 strong police force. If he is not willing to use them to rein in Palestinian terrorists then Israel will. He was perfectly willing to kills his own people just because they demonstrated in support of Osama and that really looked bad on evening news in the US and Europe.

The U.S. people who make these demands are on crack. Israel needs to do what we're doing, and they are. Taking out terrorists who are a threat to their security. Arafat signed an agreement that he would arrest any terrorists, and if he isn't doing that, Israel needs to. And then, they need to do the same thing to Arafat.

No, I don't miss that point. First, this is the purpose of continuing negotiations. It was Arafat who walked out of the negotiations.

Furthermore, your point was the arguement sucessfully presented by Arafat at Oslo in 1993. Israel conceded to allow him a police force of 20,000 armed with automatic weapons. They stood by and allowed this to double despite being limited by contract. It is incumbent upon Arafat to use these resources in the effort of peace, not war.

It doesn't help to see the police that were supposed to be used to help enforce the peace involved in the terror. For example, if you recall the few weeks before the Intifada broke loose (before Sharon visited the temple mount) a Palestinian police officer shot and killed his Israeli partner while on joint patrol. This is the kind of stuff that makes trust break down. And it spirals into an abyss if it is not brought to an immediate halt. I don't believe Arafat has done nearly enough to wind down the violence. He should have outlawed Hamas after the first bombing of the disco. Instead, they have continued to operate inside his territory to this day.

If Arafat is incapable of shutting them down, he should negotiate for more power, or stand back and let Israel do it for him. He can't just stand there doing nothing.
