An envelope containing white powder in a Nassau post office has initially tested positive for anthrax.
This is the first discovery of anthrax in the Caribbean, officials say.
The letter was destined for a Bahamas address and had a local stamp, claims Police Commissioner Paul Farquharson.
Investigators are naming the recipient or whether the envelope had a return address. Lab tests at a Nassau hospital indicate the presence of anthrax spores, says Chief Medical Officer Marceline Dahl-Regis.
Officials are now waiting for the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention to confirm it the bacterium.
None of the 10 employees in the area has shown symptoms of anthrax and nasal swabs have tested negative.
The letter was discovered when a worker unloading mail noticed the envelope was leaking white powder, police said.
In the United States, ten people have been diagnosed with anthrax.
Most were linked to contaminated letters sent to US media outlets and politicians.
Kenya and Argentina have also received anthrax-contaminated letters sent from the United States.
I'm not paranoid, but the gears in my head certainly are turning....
Be safe, be sane, be aware.
I got onto Companies House where details of all UK companoies are held. As @ GMT 10.30 site is saying "Major security alert at Companies House this will affect delivery and service. Cannot get the details I require. Nothing on breaking news anywhere about such a scare.
PurVirgo is right I think, this anthrax is a diversion tying up public resources and deflecting from main project.
It turned out to be a false-positive.
"There is no anthrax bacillus detected after two basic tests of bacteriology and culture," said Paulo Buss, president of the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation, Brazil's leading biochemical and research laboratory.
He said the laboratory had tested 60 suspicious letters and found no evidence of anthrax

If you want to see something that will really curl your hair, take a look at this thread from the past couple of nights. Al Qa'eda threatened to make the mothers of America weep for their children...how thinly veiled a threat is that?

Forewarned is forearmed.
I will have to say that the security seemed really tight. No non cruise ship passengers allowed past a checkpoint to the harbor area.
A lot of Customs and Police officers in sight and checking passports, cruise ship ID's and drivers licenses etc.

Evidence tied Kadir to accused Iranian terrorist -FBI investigator says in JFK bomb plot case
By Stabroek staff | February 8, 2010 in Local News
SNIPPET [snatched from a post by Freeper Cindy, IIRC] : An FBI officer has sworn in an affidavit that former PNCR parliamentarian Abdul Kadir, indicted over a conspiracy to
blow up the JFK airport in 2007, had links to Iranian Moshen Rabbani who was charged in Argentina for masterminding a deadly attack on a Jewish centre.
SNIPPET: Rabbani-who was a cultural attaché at the Iranian embassy in Argentina in 1994- is being sought for allegedly
masterminding the 1994 car-bombing that killed 85 people and injured hundreds more at the Jewish Mutual Association of
Argentina (AMIA).
The FBI agent said that Kadir- whose only contact with the US was back in 1996 when he was intransit on his way to and from The Bahamas- is linked to the plot through telephone conversations and surveillance.
The officer argued that the search by the Guyanese lawmen and those in Trinidad, who had examined his luggage after he was arrested in that country on his way to Iran through Venezuela, were all done in accordance with the laws of the two countries.
SNIPPET: Kadir and Defreitas along with Kareem Ibrahim, an imam from Trinidad and another Guyanese Abdel Nur have been
charged with conspiring to blow up JFK airport, tanks storing aviation fuel and underground fuel pipelines in 2007
