I received this as a forwarded email from a pilot friend today.
My initial impression was that it might be an email hoax as I haven't seen it previously reported and couldn't find it published on a news site.
What I have been able to confirm are three things:
A) Mr. Nazim Amin is a Delta flight attendant.
B) Delta Flight 15 was diverted to Gander on 9/11/01.
C) No country could wish for better friends and neighbors than we have in the Canadians.

OMG! That was my aunt's flight!!She's a flight attendant for Delta and was on the 9/11 Frankfurt to Cincy flight. When she told me the story of Gander, she wept while speaking of the kindness she found there. I'm so glad you posted this :)
CG, thanks for the ping...I would have missed this!

Canadian diplomats risked their lives to give sanctuary to our people in Iran many years ago. This doesn't surprise me. God bless the Canadians once again.

Incredible Hospitality
There is a sad update to this story. From this week's Gander Beacon:
Gander International Airport to see cut in air service By JANICE HENSTRIDGE, The Beacon
Gander International Airport will see a loss in service as a result of cuts to Air Nova's fall schedule due to the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on the United States.
There will now be no flights from Deer Lake to Gander, and flights from Gander to Halifax will be serviced via St. John's or Stephenville.
To compensate for the loss, a new daily Dash 8 service will be added from Gander via Stephenville into Halifax. The number of daily Beech 1900 flights from Gander to St. John's will also be increased from five to six.
"We're certainly going to lose a substantial amount of revenue," said Gary Vey, CEO and president of the Gander International Airport Authority Inc. "Hopefully not the amount we had earlier anticipated, but it's going to depend on how many folks use the service from here to St. John's because Air Nova is attempting to put people through St. John's rather than provide a direct link to Halifax and beyond."
While it is still uncertain as the exact amount of revenue that will be lost by the airport, Mr. Vey said there will be a direct hit in landing fees in the range of a quarter million dollars. . .
A substantial hit for a town of 10,000. A long article, dated Sept 17-23, from the Gander Beacon detailing the help the residents gave passagers is here:
Gander sees influx of 6,500
Thirty-seven diverted planes lined the runways of Gander International Airport after terrorist attacks in the U.S., leaving the region to aid about 6,500 stranded passengers. Courtesy of 103 Search and Rescue. . . continued here

I read other similar stories from NF. Reminds me of the week I spent in Newfoundland 2 years ago. Spent time in St. Johns, Gander, and Twillingate. Had a terrific time and had the opportunity to discover the hospitality for myself. A beautiful place with beautiful people. The icebergs are great, too.

Bless the good people of Gander. I had a stopover there once on a flight from Paris. It's really an "outpost" of an airport. Never left the airport, but the Canadians were polite and professional. It's stunning the amount of international traffic that little town handles.

Before I judge the Canadian's by their government, I ask myself if I want American's judged by Congress.... The Canadian PEOPLE are wonderful.

My mother is from Newfoundland just a few hours from Gander. I was born in St. John's and am an American because my father was a U.S. serviceman stationed there at the time. He met my mother there, they were married and...well, the rest of the story is not so important. But what I wanted to say was that I'm proud to be a Newfoundlander as well as an American. I know the kind of heart my mother has, and know of the kind hearts of all my family on her side, and I can tell you, Newfoundlanders are wonderful, loving, caring people who would go out of their way, give you their last dollar to show kindness to others. Yes, a part of my heart will always be a Newfoundlander, but most of it will always be as proud as anything to be called an AMERICAN!
