To have used this ship,we have to have taken the Stinger missiles out.

They supposedly had a hundred of them. They either have shot them, we blew up where they were stored, or they don't work. I would say we have pretty good intelligence on the ground to know it would be safe to use these.

This baby is frightening weapon. They say a cigarette pack in the target area will be hit at least twice. If we used it, there are likley a large number of dead bodies.

AFAIK the sensors have improved to the extent that using it as an area weapon is going out of style. Less noise, more dead bad guys, i.e. the cigarette pack is hit only once, but dead center and with a 25mm Bofors, at least! It would really suck not to be well dug in with one of these after you, and even if you are dug in, I think the armament goes up to 105mm.

You make an excellent point- apparently the folks who decided to deploy SPECTRE are not real concerned about STINGERS- despite the media moaning about how much we are at risk from these missiles against our low-flying aircraft. Perhaps they know something the media doesn't (It wouldn't be the first time!).

Note: the AC-130 is usually accompanied by an MC-130 "Combat Talon" specially loaded with parajumper Graves Registration Specialists, body bags, and a chaplain or two to do the necessary readings on behalf of the folks in the AC-130's target area :o)

Why a 105mm howitzer? A gun with a hith trajectory? Are they shooting the moon?

I rather think it's a 105mm gun.

When you're shooting DOWN, gravity is working FOR you, not against you. Also, a high-velocity gun would be even MORE of a kick in the seat of the pants than a howitzer capping off.

And Puff the Magic Dragon was a converted C-47; the AC-130s were, IIRC, purpose-built (at least the AC-130Us are).

And the Taliban troops are probably thinking it is just a transport coming in for another food drop. Little do they know that this one has a different kind of "delivery."

On the 75mm equipped B25's (WWII), the speed of the plane also helped; nose mounted. Later tank-mounted flame-throwers replaced the B25's.
