Do you remember Freepin in 1998?

I first found Free Republic through Drudge Report. I found Drudge by listening to the White House briefing sessions who constantly told everyone how radical he was. (I knew he was my kind of people.)
To get to my point, or to make a short story long, Does anyone else remember freepin back then?
There were days you couldn't get on. When you did get on, it took forever to load the posts. There were three options. Next 10 - 50 -100 and a simple search engine. Remember the posts that said "Please don't post graphics, I can't read the posts if you do."?
Don't get me wrong, many of the improvements that have been made, are because the technology has changed. I also got a faster modem and new computer and learned how to use them.
I Would set my alarm for 5:00 am to get on while it wasn't busy. At first, I didn't post, there were self appointed post police that would tear you a new one, if you didn't hold your mouth just right. But finally, I thought, what the heck, they can't see me, they don't know me, I can take it.
Here I am ramblin on - what I wanted to do is say a great big thanks to John for the newest improvements.
Thanks John!!!
P.S.
When is it going to make my coffee in the morning?

We found the face of evil in our midst....and named it
Coven. The name stuck because of it's inherent truth...the face of evil cannot survive the light of day. Besides, it was damned good fun to fight a righteous fight.
Regards, to all of the old veterans of those wars,

Why, I don't know what you mean! That was an 'educational forumn' if I remember correctly.
BTW, I just consumed more bandwidth with that moose pic than what FR consumed in all of '98. :)

You seemed fairly coherent to me -- at least compared to the amateur drunks at school.

Yes, I remember it well. FreeRepublic.com is the greatest thing since sliced bread (even better, actually). I've been hooked since 1998 and am living happily ever after. The only times I refrain from at least lurking are when things get very, very, very bad for us Freepers (like when the stupid senseless senate let clintoon off the hook, or when hitlery stole/bought the senate seat. Ug, it sure hurts to recall such things!)

January 98 through Drudge. Didn't register until Elian. To this day I don't understand how some otherwise logical posters, whose opinions I respected, would fall for the "Fathers Rights" hook.
And for the nth time, thank you Great Patriots Robinson!

Why thank you. I actually used to get personally flamed by Jim himself. I just didn't realise why? It was because he had the time to get angry at individual posters in his home.

Re "A1stus" -
It was my understanding he was not going to continue posting on Free Republic, John.
Perhaps Billie can give current information?
Hope things go well for you!

I remember finding F.R. off of Drudge ( like everyone else did ).
F.R. had a black intro screen that was kind of confusing with links to "Capitol Hill Blue" etc.
I believe that my career has "leveled off" noticably since I joined, something about being "focused" while at work.

I remember my first freep in late 1998. I was living in Dallas at the time (boy, do I miss Texas), and drove up to Oklahoma City to meet several other FReepers for an impeachment rally.
It was cold, but we held our signs out for a couple of hours. It was right before the icestorm came through that year... and gas was only 79 cents a gallon.
It was a fun time to be a FReeper. It was before all of the flame wars, started happening.
Thanks for posting this thread. It brings back a lot of good memories.

Anyone remember the farting bride thread? LOL! I do! Fondly! She ran from the church, mortified by her "breaking of wind"! One Freeper noted that she should have just "shot" herself to her Hawaiian honeymoon with her own gas. I was ROTF! (Don't get me started on the poopy pool thread!!!!!!) fsf

The "Freepin in '98" directly led to the rightful impeachment of the President of the United States. The years of my life I devoted to saturating my mind with the wealth of information on this site has been and still is very rewarding.
Treason was the Reason!

This has been fun....I cannot keep up with all of you! A1st did the unthinkable, John - he actually managed to "leave" and stay gone! Harrowup, I did, too, send you a personal invitation to Freeper Island long time ago - I sent it airmail (via paper airplane)!
Who did we forget? I miss CHIEF_negotiator - he was one of us. :^(
Good night, all.
BFO - don't tell anyone I'm a week older than you! :^)
