The Neverending Story
An ongoing debate on Scripture, Tradition, History and Interpretation.

Statesmen may plan and speculate for liberty, but it is religion and morality alone which can establish the principles upon which freedom can securely stand. The only foundation of a free constitution is pure virtue. - John Adams

1] I don't have much confidence in the authenticity of the document, based on what I read in the Catholic Encyclopedia about conflicting manuscripts and authorship.

While the Catholic Enyclopedia is an outstanding reference, it was written in the first decade of the 1900's. Textual criticism and modern Patristic scholarship has has matured a lot in the past 100 years.

Also, the translations and editorial notes of the Early Church Fathers at CCEL are about 120 years old. Once again, scholarship has increased by leaps and bounds since then.

I could be wrong, but I don't think that (what seems like) the most prolific Protestant apologists on the Internet, James White and William Webster(men who make a living into trying to find Protestantism in the Fathers), dispute the authenticity of the shorter version of Ignatius' 7 epistles.

Just some food for thought.

I just ordered a four book set on the Early Church Fathers. When I get them, I see what info the author has on this subject.

Pray

You obviously didn't take a look at those links I provided to you the other day or else you wouldn't make such blatantly rediculous statements.

As you did with the verb trogo. Continue...

The world of Catholicism had been racked by scandal for years on end Well, radicals claims that the world of United States Government has been racked by scandal since it began, but that does not means that one tears down the whole government and starts from scratch as the Communists did in Russia. In spirit, Luther was much like Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab, who was also obsessed with "purity."

How sad it is that you still think death represents a barrier between Christians. Didn't Jesus die to prove that death has no meaning?

Do dead Christians communicate with you? Or is it only one way? And if it's only one way, isn't that a barrier? And Jesus didn't die to prove death has no meaning, just to take the sting out of it. Death still has a lot of meaning, depending on where your faith is at the point of death.

The comparison of Fundamentalism to Gnosticism "works" on a number of levels.

1) It establishes that the speaker is an expert on both Fundamentalism and obscure things like Gnosticism
2) It compares the enemy (Protestantism) to a group all acknowledge as heretics (even Fundamentalists, hmmm)
3) It points out the role of the doctrine of the Catholic church and its infinite superiority as it beat back the gnostics once and will do it again

That was my assumption as well.
Although I will say that Gnosticism is alive and well (probably more so than when it began) and I've seen some examples on these threads. I still don't make the connection that I think was implied (but I can't even find the posts you seem to be replying to, so my memory may be faulty).

by the Church

And the Church is made up of what? Fallible people. So who moderates the moderators? Who evaluates the evaluators? Hopefully the same person who does in my church, the Holy Spirit. Course, I'm convinced I could do better than the Holy Spirit from time to time (only to be brought crashing back to earth).

Now if we consider the Church to be an organism its collective understanding of Truth has been growing for two millennia. What we all understand now about God is based upon generations before us learning and adding to this store of understanding.

This does not sound good, Dave. Would Jude, verse 3 be appropriate here?

This is either naive or dishonest. Please correct it.

How so? The Council was held in 325 A.D. and the NT canon was not closed until 397 A.D.

2 Pet. 1:20 "First of all you must understand this, that no prophecy of scripture is a matter of one's own interpretation."

You know, I always thought that this statement was an assurance for us that the prophets of old who wrote the scriptures did not write THEIR OWN INTERPRETATION of the revelation God gave them; rather, they wrote exactly what the Spirit wanted them to write...

And you were exactly right. It is proven in the next verse that says: For prophecy never had its origin in the will of man, but spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

What do you expect from someone who says we can't understand Scripture ourselves? He must be speaking from experience.

Touche :). But hey, don't fault me, fault the Protestant Strong's Concordance.

Did you ever check out those links I posted on the Eucharist? I think you would appreciate them.

As far as the metaphorical use of "Eat my flesh", see Psalms 27, Isaiah 9:20; 49:29, Micah 3:3.

All kinds of things. But my specialty was portrature. I could create a portrate of such exquisite detail that a photograph would pale in comparison. I won regional and National gold medals for my work. I would rather be obedient and little than huge in disobedience.

It sounds like you stopped, Why?

Hey that's kind of fun to agree on something.

Amen! It truly boggles my mind on how people can actively support such a great evil.

Live the Gospel of Life!

Oh yes I see of course we all are inspired by the Holy Spirit! And, we are inspired exactly the same way the old prophets were! So why do I even need the Bible? I have the HS instructing me personally and without fear of error.

Hay every one I'm going to write my own HS Inspired Book. But, you don't even need to read it, since you all have the HS making sure that you all can understand on your own every thing there is to know, making my Book redundant to begin with.

What do you all think?

I think you reap what you sow. Our country has taken prayer out of schools, removed the Ten Commandments from Federal Buildings and legalized abortions. I also feel there are enough of us who fear the wrath of God and pray to him for deliverance. So I say keep praying and God help us all.

A little common sense and reading it all in context was enough to understand that one (as it usually is).

Based on that definition I would expect no "tradition" was developed after the deaths of the Apostles. In other words; it is not developing.

Of course it develops, but in this sense: the Holy Spirit gives the Church a deeper or more poignant understanding of Christ’s teachings and Works, as we need them. You see that was the plan, not the modern tower of babble that sola scriptura, as embraced by neo-Christendom, has created.

I imagine you disagree with this.

Sooooooo, we need the Bible to tell us we don't need the Bible?

Who is making THIS claim, Pelayo? I haven't seen anyone on this thread claiming inerrancy!

But let us discuss this personal instruction by the Holy Spirit. Anyone want to tell how we know if/when the Holy Spirit will illumine our minds to correctly comprehend Scripture?
