Statesmen may plan and speculate for liberty, but it is religion and morality alone which can establish the principles upon which freedom can securely stand. The only foundation of a free constitution is pure virtue. - John Adams |
That's right and I know it, but go back and read it again, they do a decent job trying to support their case with Bible refernces, then they get to the big one and guess what, no Scriptural support offered. Very interesting.
Yes you do. I don't always like it or agree with it, but I appreciate it and respect you for it.
Brown seriously questioned the historical validity of various aspects of Christianity, such as the Virgin Birth. There's another benchmark I use. If the National Catholic Reporter(a heterodox "Catholic" weekly) falls over over themselves with praise for a theologian, as they do Brown, I avoid that person's writings and thought like the plague. Trust me, he was no centrist.
For me, it's orthodoxy or nothing. I trust "centrist" theologians about as far as I can throw them. (Well, with your bad knee Ed, you shouldn't throw anybody.)
I've have read some of Sheed's Theology and Sanity and was quite impressed and I know the same caliber can be expected of Sheen and Guardini. Those will definitely be put on the wish list at Amazon.
What I'm looking for are more indepth, historical, and technical treatments of Christology. Something at the college or seminary level.

I've raised this issue a couple of times here and got no response from our catholic friends. No attempt to explain it or justify it. Only silence.
I'm pretty sure it has something to do with the Prime Directive, and swiss cheese :)

I have a friend who refers to it as the National Arian Reporter.

If I think of anything, I'll ping you. I'm sure you already have Ott's Fundamentals of Catholic Dogma, as well as Aquinas.
But didn't they say we would get cheese if we did? I'm sure that was in there, I'm going back and re read just to make sure. :)

I'm afraid we'd lose Angelo to the RC's if they offered cheese. No packer fan has ever been able to turn that down.
So then, having this scripture before us, and recognizing the severity of God's judgement against sin, I guess it would be a reasonable assumption that you two have ceased from sinning, lest you should be found in your sin at Christ's return. Would you mind sharing with the rest of us how you did it, became perfect, I mean? We all seem to be having a little more trouble with that than you.
Tell me, reading this scripture, it would seem that once one has received Christ and become born again, if he commits even one more sin, he is doomed, because there remains no more sacrifice for sin, "There will be only the dreadful prospect of judgement and of the raging fire that will burn rebels." That means for most, if not all of us, we're screwed! But that is what your hard-line approach is saying.
Sorry, my Bible indicates that Jesus died for all my sins, not just the ones up to the point I was born again. So, as I walk with Him, if I sin, and confess my sin, He is faithful and just to forgive my sin, and cleanse me from ALL unrighteousness. We have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the Righteous.
Havoc, 1 John 5:10-12 is something I want to point out to you. It says, and I quote, "He that believes on the Son of God has the witness in himself; he that does not believe God has made him a liar, because he does not believe the record that God gave concerning His Son. And this is the record, THAT GOD HAS (past tense) GIVEN TO US ETERNAL LIFE, AND THAT LIFE IS IN HIS SON. HE THAT HAS THE SON HAS LIFE, AND HE THAT DOES NOT HAVE THE SON DOES NOT HAVE LIFE". If I believe on Jesus Christ, I have been given eternal life already, because that life is in Jesus, and Jesus lives in me. It is not a reward, it is not future, it is now. Salvation encompasses more than just eternal life, as it is concerned with the whole man. If I'm saved, then I have eternal life. If I'm saved, I have healing. If I'm saved, I have provision for all my needs according to God's riches in glory by Christ Jesus. All means all: financial, temporal, physical, food, clothing, shelter. And Eternal life as well. God's Grace is such that if I sin, my sin is already paid for, and I am still saved even before I confess that sin. Yes I should confess that sin, but at no time am I not saved, from the time I sin until the time I confess that sin. I am His, and nothing can pluck me out of His Hand, not even my own momentary lapse.
When David came to Mahana'im, Shobi the son of Nahash from Rabbah of the Ammonites, and Machir the son of Am'miel from Lo-debar, and Barzil'lai the Gileadite from Ro'gelim, brought beds, basins, and earthen vessels, wheat, barley, meal, parched grain, beans and lentils, honey and curds and sheep and cheese from the herd, for David and the people with him to eat; for they said, "The people are hungry and weary and thirsty in the wilderness." (2 Samuel 17:27-29)
For the record, there are no references to cheese in the Christian scriptures. I'm sure this proves something.
See my #6391. The only holy cheese is in the Hebrew scriptures.
Ok guys we got all the verses lined up, now for the Big One, Umm lets see, page turning, no not there, more page turning, no not there, scratches head, I got it, I got it, Furthermore, we declare, we proclaim, we define that it is absolutely necessary for salvation that every human creature be subject to the Roman Pontiff. Thats it guys and if we throw in some cheese, its a shoe in. :)

It means you Jews wouldn't share the cheese with us Christians. :)

If you cannot see the glaring falsehood of a man proclaiming that other men must be subject to him in order to avoid eternal damnation, then nothing I say to you is going to convince you otherwise. Perhaps, for the benefit of those of us who just don't 'get it', you can point out where the theological truth is in this?
He is asserting the supremacy of the spiritual authority over the secular authority.
I don't think 'spiritual authority' has anything to do with this, aside from its use as a cover for the pope's assertion of his own 'secular' authority.
NOT !
also take these ten cheeses to the commander of their thousand. See how your brothers fare, and bring some token from them (1 Samuel 17:18)foreshadows a time when our cheese would be shared with all our brothers.
Would it matter to you if he did? If Boniface did give Scripture references for his last sentence, you would be sreaming up and down just like you always do with any other Catholic Truth that we show from Scripture.
If you want to know what the the deal is with Unam Sactam in its historical and theological context, here is a link entitled, The Unam Sanctam "Problem" Resolved.

They got cheese too! I hope they got that commodity cheese my grand mother got years ago, man that was good cheese. :)
