The Neverending Story
An ongoing debate on Scripture, Tradition, History and Interpretation.

Statesmen may plan and speculate for liberty, but it is religion and morality alone which can establish the principles upon which freedom can securely stand. The only foundation of a free constitution is pure virtue. - John Adams

Ok forgive me. I thought you really meant it when you said this;

we do not utter the joyous word of praise and thanks to God.

What part of that is hard to understand? Jesus didn't write a book while He was here. He didn't. Sorry you don't understand simple words.

Doesn't matter whether or not he physically picked up a pen a wrote. He's the author of the entire Bible. Sorry you don't understand that.

I did say it and I meant it. THE joyous word. Starts with an "a," or maybe an "h." Handel wrote a famous chorus using it over and over. We dont' use that particular word. That doesn't mean we are without other words of praise.

I think where we disagree is the definition of the Church.

As always. Mine you can point to, ask questions of and receive answers, knowing that the answer is bound in heaven likewise.

Yours is amorphous and the scope of questions it can answer with the full backing of Heaven is limited. Or else the number of true believers is very small, and difficult to find.

You don't think it would have made a difference if Jesus had sat down while He was here and wrote a book for us? The fact that He did not speaks volumes to me about how much importance His ministry placed on writing and how much it was about people.

Oh, and God as the Holy Spirit inspired the writing. God is not the author, there were human authors.

What do you think that word means?

"Praise YHWH" from the Hebrew.

Because we don't use that word doesn't mean we don't do it in other words, if that's where you're going.

He wrote it without picking up a pen. It has all we need to know about ministry and people. Makes about as much difference as you giving up speaking the word "allelujah" for lent.

Don't forget that , in addition to reading, Jesus DID write SOMETHING . When confronting the crowd preparing to stone the woman taken in adultery, He picked up a stick and began writing on the ground , saying, "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone."
As He was writing, the crowd began to drift away .
However, His words to us were,IMVHO, preached to us through the preaching of His Apostles in the Church that HE founded on the rock of Peter .

The way in which the Vatican’s chief spokesman, Joaquin Navarro-Falls, tried to pin the Church’s pedophile corruption on good gay priests last Sunday was just too much for him.
Seeing as Joaquin Navarro-Falls' statement is what set Andrew Sullivan off, and given that I'm suspicious of Sullivan's interpretation of anything Catholic, I would need to read the statement for myself before commenting on Sullivan's take on it. I would then need to know for whom Navarro-Falls was speaking. Quite frankly, Andrew Sullivan strikes me as more interested in self-promotion and justifying his own homosexuality than he does in seeking truth, so why even bother?

I take it you're not big on self-denial? Try not having your favorite food for a month, or abstaining from sex. Then experience it anew. There is something in our souls which requires a periodic refocusing, lest we be numbed by repetition.

It is not just semantics. We see in this little dispute a microcosm of the typical NC attitude of dismissing the human element in anything having to do with God.

God did not transcribe the Bible by Himself, He did not deliver it, in leather bound edition. He inspired humans to acheive his work. He became human to do His greates work. He indwells humans to spread His message.

We are agreed that he is the author of the Bible. But it does matter that he chose not personally to write down his his message. He and the Spirit act through human beings, and we have received the Bible through his mouthpieces.

II>I think people like Kay Bailey and Phil Graham (Gramm ?) are rinos. I, perhaps, have set the bar too high but I don't think so. I like Ron Paul tho.

al_c>Ya think? I think they've done pretty well upholding conservative values overall. I'm warming up to Ron Paul ... didn't like him much when he first started. Maybe because I was living in liberal Austin at the time? ;o)

Phil Gramm of Texas was a Conservative Democrat not unlike myself
until the Marxist ran off anyone in the Democrat Party who believed
in the Bill of Rights about twenty to twenty-five years ago.

I still regard myself as a reconstructed Southern Democrat to this day.

However the last Democrat I voted for was Ben Nighthorse-Campbell
in a primary against Dick Lamm( the old folks need to just die to lower the Social Security Rolls).

Ron Paul is interesting however he belongs to the Libertarian Party
whose platform includes Drugs for everyone, Abortion for everyone,
license to anything. It is just short of anarchy.

I take it you're not big on self-denial?

You have no idea what I do for self-denial. One thing I do know about self-denial. I don't advertise that I'm gonna do it for 40 days.

Matthew 6:16 Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.

Try not having your favorite food for a month, or abstaining from sex. Then experience it anew. There is something in our souls which requires a periodic refocusing, lest we be numbed by repetition.

Ya, try not to say "allelujah" for 40 days. That one's a killer.

Men, humans, the Bible..........all created by God. Typical of catholics to dismiss most things spiritual and give glory to men.
