The Neverending Story (The New Christian Chronicles)
Southern Baptists ending talks with Catholic Church ^ | 3/24/01 | AP

The Neverending Story
An ongoing debate on Scripture, Tradition, History and Interpretation.

Statesmen may plan and speculate for liberty, but it is religion and morality alone which can establish the principles upon which freedom can securely stand. The only foundation of a free constitution is pure virtue. - John Adams

"Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, a virgin will be with child and bear a son, and she will call His name Immanuel [GOD WITH US]." Isa. 7:14

Except this passage is not messianic, and refers to a prophecy fulfilled centuries before the birth of Jesus. It also doesn't say 'virgin'. The Hebrew word is almah (young woman), not betulah (virgin). Check most any modern translation.

They are so much better people then their father and I

Big Mack, maybe. You? I bet he disagrees.

Yes. They are certainly more than we deserve (and you can take that any way you like)

You know, I always had a strong notion of God as Father, and could make parallels to our love for Him. Over the last couple years, I have come to a new understanding of His Love for us.

I, of course, being the man in this conversation... will.. not.... cry (sniff sniff). :-)

Tell me, which of the 12 apostles and Paul, James, Jude or Mark were alike?

Paul and Jude both had green eyes :)

When did Paul lose his apostleship? Was that a Protestant encyclical I missed?

Otherwise, agreed.

Please show me scripture where it says that the proof of the Holy Spirit is that we will all speak as one, and be identical. (^g^)

Can I use Ben Franklin's Bible?

You play a role in your own salvation.

Of course I do, and I deserve as much veneration for the role I play in my own salvation as Mary does for the role she plays in all of ours.

OK, so your Church doesn't claim to have the power to bind and loose.

My church does.

God said here is my Son. He is the perfect sacrifice for your sins ... but only if you accept it. Yeah, right.

Mine are 6mo & 17mo. You're telling me it gets harder? :-)

Oh, my. You must be a Catholic! ;o)

Actually, it gets easier. After they are 2-3 years old, at least you can talk with them. As a dad, the older they get the more fun it is. Most dads I know don't have much fun dangling little toys for infants to look at. Moms like to cuddle and fuss over the little ones. Dads like it when they get big enough to do things. My son recently developed an interest in simple board games. And card games. We play UNO, and he beats me as often as not. He also likes to watch football and baseball with me.

Two boys? Two girls? One of each? My son is named Gavin, and my daughter is named Adrienne.

It is taken care of once and for all on the Cross.

That's my point.

What part of, "Whatever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven," do you not understand?

I assume this is a shift in tactics which almost directly contradicts the first statements made by Catholics regarding the Friday/meat thing. And I'm not sure that the use of "binding" and "loosing" is appropriate.

Peter was called upon to be the "oracle of Heaven" as SoothingDave likes to say in that he was to pass along the judgments of Heaven here on earth. One would now have to show how not eating meat on Fridays passes on the judgment of Heaven.

We should always pause before assuming that something "doesn't apply" to modern anything.

I guess I was a bit too cryptic. I was alluding to something Becky posted yesterday.

Uhhh... I disagree. Matt.6:16-18 Jesus knew they were fasting to get attention and rewards from people. He did not say fasting was right or wrong, just that it should be done for no EARTHLY gain. Unless you are looking at a different scripture this is what I was referring to?

Nope, I was just applying the same interpretive model you used yesterday in the story about the rich man who asked Jesus what he needed to do to have eternal life. Remember?

Dang skippy! You don't accept salvation, you don't got salvation. If you want to call that limiting grace, then it's dang sure limited - and By God - not man.

My, how this topic has turned. The original issue was this ... is every person a part of the body of Christ? And now we're discussing God's grace? How'd we get here?!

I wasn't aware the RSV, Catholic edition differed from the RSV except it also had the Apocrypha. I found references in GOOGLE to a 1966 RSV Catholic Edition but could find no online editions. (For free, that is.) Since I have no intention of purchasing one, could you point to an online source?

Here's one: http://www.hti.umich.edu/r/rsv/

Thanks, I already have this version bookmarked. Unfortunately, this can't be the version Dignan3 was referring to.

This version says:

Luke 1:

[30] And the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.

Dignan has a version which says' "Hail--full of grace"???

It appears, if there is one version, somewhere, that is the one Dignan will use. Oh well!

"is every person a part of the body of Christ?"

I'll answer this. No. Only those who are saved are.

From #2057: Frankly, I have the seal of God, that I have eternal life...

Since you have the "seal of God" do you no longer sin?

I'd be interested in your answer to this question (if you've already answered, kindly point me in the right direction).

Oh, my. You must be a Catholic! ;o)

Don't let anyone tell you that nursing is an effective form of family planning!

Thomas is the toddler (he loves board games too. Though perhaps not in the way you mean. Benjamin in the baby. Thank God they take after their mother.

We would love a girl, but think we will wait a bit (my wife left the delivery room after her second natural childbirth saying "I won't be seeing you next year".
