You're amazing. This is SO cool!
I'm going to play with my style sheet tomorrow!

I've been tinkering with a new way to do self-search. It will display the comments as if they were in a thread, but only displays those comments addressed to you or posted by you. Have a look at it here: Last 100 posts involving you -- in reverse chronological order, like latest posts New posts to you (since last time you checked) -- in forward chronological order, like a normal thread I think this should be listed in forward chrono order, but that might make browsing your self-search awkward.

Making changes to the Self-Search function, and in particular, how the database is organized in relation to Self-Search. Self-Searches should now be lightning quick and should span many months. The current index holds about 6 months of data (all I have available.)

With the conclusion of last week, two years of Free Republic site statistics are now available for comparison. Watch the forum grow 300-400% in those two years. A remarkable achievement for a site advertised almost solely word-of-mouth. Click here to dazzle yours eyes and mind. A bountiful cornucopia, statistically pleasing, matrix of pure joy awaits.

Many technical changes are taking place here at Free Republic. While these changes are taking place, I will run a "Recent Changes - Problem Thread". The purpose of this thread is to document problems, bugs, and general difficulty which may be related to these changes. Comments and criticism are expressly welcome. Issues Author, Source, Keyword searches are currently disabled. Topic listings are currently disabled. Occassional difficulty submitting posts. Desires Return of the E-mail field on replies. I am deciding if it is worth the visual clutter. More distinction between posting a reply and sending a private reply. More space between ...

There is some odd problem with Netscape and italics getting stuck on. It's something to do with the style sheets, I believe. So I am killing the default style sheet. Original Thread See the original thread if you would like to install your own custom style sheet.

thanks bump

A big THANKS bump. One last request (forgot it on the self-search-is-live thread); could you enclose the navigation inside the .fr_page class? Not that it's a big deal, but with the way I had to write my style sheet to get .fr_page_here and .fr_page_goto to display properly on Internut Exploder 6 (it's only IE that's the problem there; all versions of Nutscape, both 4.x and Mozilla-based, didn't have a problem with the lazy-man's way of setting those text properties), it doesn't quite work on self-search. Thank you again for the work you put in. MUCH better you than me <VBG>

I'm still disgruntled, but just a bit more fixing will fully gruntle me.
At the top and bottom of every thread, we find a number of options, including "Self-Search" and "Abuse".
So where's the "Self-Abuse" option, hmmmmmmm? As long as they're down in the code wrenching away . . . . . .

Or...
"How To Teach An Old FReeper New Tricks!" Ouch.
My brain hurts...hehehe.
(I vote with Anna, though, on the e-mail addy space...wasn't that fun?)

Thanks too for your help. Having pulled the articles last night, I realize the default style sheet was killed (explains the dead link on the other site) but -- as I said -- shall play with all that some time today once I get my chores done.

Thank you John Robinson! I am delighted with all the new stuff!

So where's the "Self-Abuse" option, hmmmmmmm? You're not getting the mouse-over effect on your post button depending on what sort of thread or to what poster you are replying?
My post button not only turns red but sounds a siren in warning if I even think about posting to the likes of Sinkspur, taking umbrage with "sexual liberation" or sticking up for Keyes or Klayman. =)

Lol! Can't wait to see the homepage of "Gagging As I Ping".
I'll admit I definitely have the Old Dog syndrome but am handling it fairly well.

Thanks, John, for all the new stuff, and thanks, Aske, for putting it all in one place for the technically challenged.
To: Askel5; John Robinson
Askel, thanks for the thread (many good links).
John, quite a few really good ideas incorporated into this one revamp. The 50-reply thread chunks should help 'load-balance', especially when there are several 'hot' threads, the self-search takes me back some 1057 replies, if I want, the HTML reset will save a lot of headache.
Overall, remarkable. Kudos, and a brew or two, John.
