Women taking lessons on using guns
Scripps Howard News Service ^ | October 12, 2001 | Jennifer Biggs

SOUTHAVEN, Miss. - The police department here armed 50 women this week and Chief Tom Long gave them this frank advice:

"It's better to be judged by 12 than carried by six."

The advice was heartfelt and in the spirit of the class.

"We're not trying to tell anyone to violate the law," Long said. "But we have to stress that personal safety should be everyone's primary goal."

The class, devoted to handguns, drew an overflow crowd. Capt. Phil Cox said about 100 women were turned away because there wasn't enough room.

At the session, Long and Cox explained different types of handguns, showed how to load them and demonstrated how to shoot them, including a lesson on recoil.

Recoil is the kickback of a gun after it's fired. Long told the students to lock their wrists and elbows to direct the recoil through their arms to their bodies. Controlling recoil is particularly important in self-defense shooting, Long said, because one shot is usually not enough.

"A one-shot stop with a handgun just usually doesn't happen," he said.

Linda Henderson, 62, said she knows a little about guns, but wants to conquer her fear. "I've been shown several times how to use them, but I'm still scared of them," she said. "I think I'll get more out of this class than my husband and my son showing me."

Betty Bigelow, 57, was accompanied by her daughter, Kelley, 21. "We thought it would be good to know how to defend ourselves," Betty said. "We drive back and forth to Memphis a lot."

Kelley Bigelow said she wants to learn how to use a gun so she'll feel comfortable having one.

"There's this overconfidence in just having a gun," she said. "You feel safe having it, but if you don't know how to use it, you can get hurt."

And even though knowing how to use a gun is a good defense, Long said there's a better one.

"The first thing, the best thing, is don't put yourself in a situation where you need a gun," Long said.

Yawn...being a good parent, from time to time means MAKING your child do something or learn a skill they don't want to at the time which will later benefit them.
My daughter didn't want to learn to do routine maintenance on her truck...it didn't keep her from getting her hands dirty. She is better able to take proper care of a vehicle than most women and actually a fair number of guys her age.
And n.r.a. is still h.c.i.'s most useful idiots.

G.O.A opposed PERMITS, not the right to keep and bear arms.
Since you don't mind your rights being turned into privileges why don't you be quiet until you have qualified and paid for a revocable "free speech" permit Comrade.

You're amazing. You acknowledge your insult by making another.

And just how old was your daughter when you made her learn how to maintain her truck - five? Was it a Fisher Price truck or did you stick her under the family Ford?

Teaching a teenager to fix a car is a little different than teaching a child to shoot a gun. Get a grip.

Since GOA wanted a pro-2a bill DEFEATED. They were on the same side as HCI, CSGV, Million Morons, and VPC.

I'll tell you what. You can walk around Michigan and carry without a permit, go to jail, and then fight it in court claiming the 2nd amendment. Until the judge throws it all out, I'll take what I can get.

What we have now is 100000 times better than what we had before. Instead of being on defense, which we would still be if HCI's ally GOA had their way, we are now on offense. We're going after the transportaion bill now that make carrying a pistol in the car a felony outside of a trunk. We're also going after the 'gun free zones'. You all or nothings, can join the winnable fight of incrementalism(Which is how the ASD lobby does things), or go into a 'Vermont or nothing(and get nothing) tyrade, and lose.

Hell, I want Vermont carry too. There's two ways to do that. One is move to Vermont. The other is to gradually move toward their laws slowly, but surely, which will gain the support of the middle along the way.

Hell, you're allied with the Commies, and you don't even know it.

I was in Indianapolis past few days, & all the hotel offered in the way of cable news, was CNN. The Leftist sleeze extruder continually ran a "news" ribbon at the screen's bottom saying gun sales in Texas are up 100%, & CC lic applications were going ballistic.

What hotel/chain? I'd love to send them a consumer complaint letter about their TV service.

For you ...

The Little Girl and the Wolf

by James Thurber

One afternoon a big wolf waited in a dark forest for a little girl to come along carrying a basket of food to her grandmother. Finally a little girl did come along and she was carrying a basket of food.

"Are you carrying that basket to your grandmother?" asked the wolf. The little girl said yes, she was.

So the wolf asked her where her grandmother lived and the little girl told him and he disappeared into the wood.

When the little girl opened the door of her grandmother's house she saw that there was somebody in bed with a nightcap and nightgown on.

She had approached no nearer than twenty-five feet from the bed when she saw that it was not her grandmother but the wolf, for even in a nightcap a wolf does not look any more like your grandmother than the Metro-Goldwyn lion looks like Calvin Coolidge.

So the little girl took an automatic out of her basket and shot the wolf dead.

(Moral: It is not so easy to fool little girls nowadays as it used to be.)

That's because people keep buying 9mms.

I'm not going to hit either my Grandpa's 90th or his and my Grandma's 65th wedding anniversary on the button but figured I should suss out some fall color in October and catch them for a couple days between those two dates.

Perhaps a satellite CPAC weekend out west is in order lest I use up all the ink in Anna's "gagging as I ping" account. Might be a good year to take a breather ... =)

Regarding your daughter - very impressive. How young did she start? My daughter is four and maybe we should consider getting her involved in something similar.

She was about five and 1/2 or six. There's a dojhang that has an after school program, so they pick her up after school (second grade, now)- they do their homework, and then they take class.

This gives her an accelerated path since most folks take one or perhaps two classes per week.

Great for self-confidence, self-disicpline and self-defense.

Is four too young? Perhaps. I'm not qualified to judge.

Be forewarned that just like health clubs, there are some places that are just in it for the money and will sign your kid up even if she's not ready to study.

"What chain..."

As a matter of fact, it was Embassy Suites.

But I have to tell you, I don't think a letter to the bunch responsible for operating this organization will do much good.
Just from our one weekend experience?
IMO they're so screwed-up, they're beyond hope.
In fact?
CNN & ESs make an excellent team for establishing a new low standard of, "How Things Should Not Be Done."
This outfit wins that dubious distinction, hands-down.

Which explains why we'll spend our next $200 p/night jaunt to the big city elsewhere in the future.
The Capitalist system at work.

Embassy Suites Feedback Form

I would still encourage you to give your feedback to them. If they don't know what the problem is, how can they fix it? I'm a BIG believer in using well-written customer service or consumer complaint letters to get the message through. My letters, often sent to CEOs, have apparently been good enough to warrant those CEOs actually making personal calls back to me, thanking me for my efforts to let them know.

Thank you, 'face.
I'm going to do that & especially since you were kind enough to provide me a hyperlink.

What can it hurt, huh?

Thanks, kiddo.

OOOPS! You generally DON'T wanna do that. Don't lock your elbows, just hold firm and tight.

Other than that, EXCELLENT!!!

I prefer the 115 gr. Corbon in .357 mag.

Check out Pro Load. http://www.proload.com

I swore by Cor-Bon for years; Pro Load is better. And none of the quality control problems that Cor-Bon is getting famous for the last couple of years.

Do a net search - Pro Load is beating the dickens outta EVERYBODY, including Cor-Bon. Plus, they use Gold Dot bullets, IMO the absolute best defense bullet on the market.

Good for you! (I knew if I made it easier for you, you'd do it :-).

The most important thing they need to hear from you is specifically why they will lose your business. I will also say that companies are actually paying for such feedback these days by sending out "mystery shoppers" into hotels and entertainment venues. If they get the feedback for free from REAL customers, that's a bonus to them!

You're amazing. You acknowledge your insult by making another.

Ok...ok...I'm sorry.
The intensity of your defense says a lot favorably of his character, much more than the bio itself.

And just how old was your daughter when you made her learn how to maintain her truck - five? Was it a Fisher Price truck or did you stick her under the family Ford?

My Little Green Sprout (gets miffed when I call her that outside the family) started shooting when she was 8 and started tinkering on the Dodge (NOT ford...ick) when she was 14, due to strength required, and due to the fact with shooting the danger is much more localized than with vehicle maintenance.

Teaching a teenager to fix a car is a little different than teaching a child to shoot a gun. Get a grip.

Not really, both are necessary skills that may save a male or female from harm. When Rita griped about working on the truck I told her, "I don't want you standing beside the road due to something easily repairable waiting to hitch a ride from an early release parollee.
In any event, it isn't too later for your Dad to take you shooting and quit No Rights Anymore and join effective organizations that will not sell out the 2nd Amendment.

Shut up, you haven't produced a "free speech" permit.

What we have now is 100000 times better than what we had before. Instead of being on defense, which we would still be if HCI's ally GOA had their way, we are now on offense.

What you have is a revocable permit which creates a patchwork of places where you may or may not be able to carry which actually INCREASES your risk of a firearm possession arrest. In Texas if the permit holders' weapon accidently comes into view (wind blows jacket open, purse spills) you can be arrested. In the vicinity of "public" buildning more weapons will be stolen from cars.

All these things were enacted while your No Rights Anymore were bragging about protecting your rights.

l, you're allied with the Commies, and you don't even know it.

It is bad enough that you're wrong, but could you at least be original?
Oh, btw is No Rights Anymore still bragging about the fact that they helped pass the brady law by insisting on the (not so)instant backgroung check system that is being used to permanently catalog ALL dealer firearms purchases?
